The War on Friendship - Ricochet.com

Recently I watched a television show where we, the audience, were introduced to the mother of one of the main characters as well as to the mother?s friend and roommate, another woman. I was somewhat annoyed at myself for knowing that ?friend? and ?roommate? were code words for a sexual relationship, but sure enough, as the episode progressed, I was proven correct.

As I later reflected on this admittedly small part of the episode, I realized why it bothered me so much. It wasn?t merely because I disagreed with the type of relationship portrayed; I run into that on television all the time and it rarely causes me to spend any time thinking about it later. I think most of us at Ricochet could agree that we?ve hashed out the topics of gay marriage and same-sex relationships more than enough times. At this point, we each know where we stand and minds are unlikely to change, so I want to take this discussion in a different direction.

Last month tabula rasa wrote about the decline of ?Innocent Relationships Between Old Men and Children.? I think that those are not the only types of relationships that have suffered in our current culture. There seems to be, dare I say it, a ?war on friendship,? where every relationship is looked at with suspicion and/or the assumption that it is something it?s not -- to the point where just saying someone is a friend apparently indicates a lot more, as evidenced in the scene I recounted above.

Increasingly, we live in a society that sexualizes every relationship. Society seems no longer to remember that there can be any kind of bond, closeness, even love, without a sexual component?without, at the very least, a sexual attraction. Too often today, relationships between men, between women, between men and women, between children and adults, are all looked on with suspicion or assumed to be more than friendship.

Ricochet has a lot of readers, so think about some of the great friendships portrayed in literature or even history. (Tabula Rasa, feel free to throw out some examples for us.) Of course, many of those relationships have been reinterpreted by the Women & Gender Studies department at your local state university. Leaving that aside though, could friendships like those be written of today? Could the minds of people in today?s culture conceive of a deep loving friendship that didn?t involve sex? Has the culture at large forgotten that there is such a thing as friends without benefits?

Has anyone else noticed this trend? Am I the only one who thinks a war on friendship is an overlooked side effect of the culture wars?

The best and most effective online marketing techniques. | Marketing ...

I have been in internet marketing for over three years and have seen marketing techniques come and go. Some are still around and some are new and innovative. Below you will find what I believe to be the best and most effective online marketing techniques.

Article Marketing ? Article marketing was and is one of the most powerful online marketing methods available. Not only does it do wonders for you and your business, it is free as well!

Article marketing consists of writing helpful, informative, easy to understand articles that actually help your readers, not try to sell them something. Then you submit them to article banks, directories and ezine publishers. When your article runs in a popular ezine, it can do great things for your business. Writing articles is not as hard as you might think so give it a try. You will be delightfully surprised at how much it can affect your business.

Remember:

Don?t worry about fancy words. People are looking for help, not big words.

Advertise in your resource box, not your article.

Provide real, helpful info and resources, hot hype!

Write from the heart! Let your personality shine through in your articles.
Blogging ? Blogging is a newer form of online marketing that just started becoming popular in the late 90?s. Blog is short for weblog and means an online publication in the form of a log or journal. Blogs can increase your customer base, your traffic and your search engine ranking, thus increasing your sales.

Blogging can be done for free through such sites as:
blogger.com
wordpress.com
and livejournal.com

Be sure and update your blog regularly; everyday would be best as people like fresh content, ideas and information.
Ezine Publishing ? Ezine publishing has been around much longer than blogging and is far more effective, in my opinion. Your ezine needs to contain helpful resources and information, not just sales pitches. Develop a relationship with your readers. Let them know they can trust you and rely on you when they need your help.

Things to remember when putting together your ezine:

Keep it clean and easy to read.
Limit your advertising and be selective.
Always provide quality content and information.
Add your personality so your readers can get to know you.
Always provide contact info and be accessible.
Be consistent; send your ezine regularly as scheduled.
Be sure and proofread before sending it out.
Online Networking ? Online networking, as with offline networking, is very important to your business. This is when you connect with as many people as possible to learn more and share more about your business. Many leads can come from networking. There are several ways to do this online.

Email Discussion Groups: Go to yahoogroups.com and search for appropriate groups.

Message Boards: Be sure and follow the rules for posting and offer your help as much as possible.

Social Sites: Such as MySpace.com, Ryze, Merchant Circle, etc. These can be great ways to make more contacts and get leads.
Joint Ventures ? This is when you enter into an agreement with another online marketer that will benefit both sides.

Examples of joint ventures:

Ezine Ad Swaps
eBook Ad Swaps
Subscription Page Ad Swaps
Affiliate Programs
Exchange Advertising for % of Sales

and the list goes on and on. Be creative and come up with new ways you and your associates can help each other.
Podcasting ? Podcasting is using digital media files which are distributed all over the internet via syndication feeds. Podcasting is still a fairly new way of online marketing and has great potential. Podcasting can be powerful because it uses voice not written words to get the message across. Offer your articles, do voice interviews, offer a chapter in your ebook via podcast, etc. Again, use your imagination to create new ways to spread the word about your business.
Ezine Advertising ? Advertising your business, product, service, etc. in quality ezines can be well worth the money spent. There are a few things you can to to help you choose which ezines to advertise in.

Do a search to find ezines that cater to your target market. For example: if you are advertising kids? books, you don?t want to advertise in an ezine about cars.

Once you find several targeted ezines, subscribe to them so you can look them over and see if the publisher is reliable in sending them out. You can also look over the other ads and make sure the publisher is selective in their advertising. You can possibly learn what the other readers think of the ezine as well.

Try contacting the publisher to see if they respond to your email. Ask about testimonials from other advertisers. Find out how many ads they run per issue and what the costs are.

You could also ask the publisher to do an ad swap to get an idea of what the response is like. Be selective in your choices and always code your ads so you know which ezines actually deliver.

I hope this article has given you some insight as to how to market your home/online business. I use several of these methods (and should be using the rest) and know from experience that they work!

The possibilities with the internet are endless and we need to keep up with new and innovative ways of marketing ourselves and our business. And we need to keep using tried and true methods as well.

Dixon, 2nd female bishop in Episcopal Church, dies

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Jane Holmes Dixon, who became a priest in her late 40s and later became the second female bishop in the Episcopal Church, has died. She was 75.

The Diocese of Washington confirmed that Dixon died early Christmas morning at her Washington home.

Dixon served as bishop pro tempore of the Washington Diocese in 2001 and 2002. Her tenure included a standoff with a parish whose rector refused to recognize female clergy. She filed a federal lawsuit against the pastor that was resolved in her favor.

Dixon was a stay-at-home mother when she enrolled at Virginia Theological Seminary at age 40. She became the pastor of a church in Laurel, Md., in 1982.

She was elected bishop suffragan, the second-highest rank among bishops, for the Washington diocese in 1992.

Tips For The Brand-New Internet Marketer ... - Businesses

Today, Website marketing is an incredibly important tactic for your online business. It has really become necessary to promote your business online. This makes now the right time to get involved. The following tips can help you figure out how to market your business.

One powerful Internet promotion strategy you can use is to reward the visitors and customers that come by your site often and make frequent purchases. Make sure that you keep your current customers, as they will provide a lot of value over time. This is they type of business practice that will drum up chatter about you.

Find ways to allow customers to interact with each other on your website. By doing this, you are helping foster community so your business becomes more than a product seller. As Facebook and Twitter prove, most people love the social aspect of the Internet. If you can add some social context to your business, people will want to drop by.

TIP! Keep an eye on your competitors, and learn from what they are doing. Picture yourself as a customer on their site, and if you can see yourself wanting to buy, they are doing it right.

You should take the time to look at how others respond to your content, promotions, and even your business as a whole. It is helpful to watch the responses, in forums and blogs, to your online promotional event or advertising campaign. You will want to follow your customers advice to make them feel appreciated.

Aim to always have some free samples or coupons in the shipping boxes. These boxes relate back to the product your customer will be receiving. This can increase customers? appreciation of your products and give them an additional reason to return to your site.

A great way to get customer feedback is to allow them to put ratings and reviews on your website. Honest feedback can help customers feel more confident with you and your products.

TIP! Some online business owners mess up by having a confusing site. Interactive media like Adobe Flash can be tempting when designing your website, and website designers might try to convince you to use it.

Expect to have to pay for a high-quality domain name. You most likely will not get the domain name that matches your company name. You could find a domain name similar to your company name, if you are open to spend $1,000 to $2,000.

You need to take this whole endeavor seriously and do your research. A mentor is an invaluable resource. Experts in the subject of online marketing often provide advice that is either free or available for a low cost. Find a previously proven system that works for you. Remember that it may be slow to start, but it is worth your effort and time.

You should now see why this tactic is very important to your business. With so many possible approaches, it will be easy to find on to suit your needs. There is plenty of information about how you can benefit from it all as well. Apply what you?ve just learned, and you?ll be a success in Website marketing in no time.

TIP! Be sure to include plenty of original content so that people have a reason to visit your website, and also add as much rich content as you can. You will attract search engines better by packing your site with loads of rich content.

Gold Stays Low as Hope Fades for Fiscal Cliff Resolution | Gold ...

Gold Stays Low as Hope Fades for Fiscal Cliff ResolutionGold remained stuck in the doldrums on Thursday, staying near four-month lows of around US$1,660 an ounce.?

With little news to move the gold price amid thin holiday trading, spot gold finished at an even $1,663, up $3.60 from Boxing Day. Gold futures also increased marginally, with the February gold contract last trading?up $3.40 an ounce , at $1,664.10.

The precious metal was lifted slightly by short covering and bargain hunting, even reaching $1,666 at one point during the day, but those gains were limited by the US Labor Department?s news that applications for unemployment benefits fell to one of the lowest levels of the year. The US dollar gained as a result, putting pressure on gold.

Gold investors and traders are also increasingly leery of stalled negotiations over the US ?fiscal cliff? deadline, with many preferring to sit on the sidelines and wait and see. Lawmakers in Washington have until January 1 to come up with a deal that will avoid?$600 billion in tax increases and spending cuts slated to kick in come the new year. Economists predict that the measures will push the country into a recession.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid on Thursday did not inspire any hope of a resolution, and was quoted by The Independent as saying it ?looks like? the US is heading over the fiscal cliff.

Company news

Randgold Resources (NASDAQ:GOLD) announced that production at its Tongon gold mine in?Cote d?Ivoire was impacted due to a mill fire. The incident occurred on December 24 during a planned shutdown. ?The fire has been fully extinguished and no injuries have been reported but both cyclone clusters, flotation cells and blowers along with associated infrastructure for both milling circuits suffered damage,? Randgold said in a statement. The company?s stock suffered a 0.54-percent decline on Thursday.

Al Jazeera?reported?that 4,000 miners suffering from lung disease have launched South Africa?s largest-ever class-action lawsuit against?AngloGold Ashanti (NYSE:AU), Goldfields (NYSE:GFI) and Harmony Gold Mining (NYSE:HMY). The plaintiffs claim to have contracted severe lung ailments such as tuberculosis and silicosis while working in underground gold mines and are demanding millions of dollars in compensation from the defendants, which are some of the world?s biggest mining companies.

Kinross Gold (TSX:K) Canada?s third-largest gold producer, denied a statement from Southridge Enterprises (OTC Pink:SRGE) that says the two companies are working together to develop properties in Mexico. In a statement quoted by Bloomberg, Toronto-based Kinross said the company ?has not entered into a joint venture agreement with Southridge Enterprises, and is not actively pursuing any such agreement at this time.?

Focus Minerals (ASX:FML)?completed a AU$225-million private placement with Shandong Gold Mining (SSE:600547), which will take a 51-percent equity stake in the?Australian gold miner.

Funds from the deal, approved by shareholders earlier this month, will be put towards developing Focus? existing gold projects in the Goldfields-Esperance region of Western Australia.

?This is one of the largest mining deals for an emerging mid-tier Australian gold producer in recent times and underscores the importance of Australia-China mining interests,? said Don Taig, Focus Minerals? chairman.

The Australian Federal Court has?approved?a AU$426-million merger between Silver Lake Resources (ASX:SLR) and Integra Mining (ASX:IGR). Under terms of the agreement, Silver Lake will hand over one of its own shares for every 6.28 Integra shares held.

Meanwhile, Silver Lake also?reported?that commissioning of its Murchison gold project, in Western Australia, is on track, with production expected to begin in March. The project will ramp up to 100,000 oz per year by 2014.

?We are looking forward to commissioning the Murchison gold project, bringing it into production and ramping up to 100,000 ounce per annum rates on time and in line with budget,? said Silver Lake?s managing director, Les Davis.

Junior company news?

Santacruz Silver Mining (TSXV:SCZ) announced the?completion of an updated NI 43-101 mineral resource estimate on its Rosario project?in Mexico.

?This resource classification upgrade provides us with more certainty that the Rosario Project will be an emerging silver producer that will be the foundation of the Company as we advance towards becoming a mid-tier silver producer. We remain on schedule to achieve commercial production at the Rosario Project within the first quarter of 2013,? said Santacruz?s president, Arturo Pr?stamo. The deposit hosts 270,000 tonnes of mineralization containing 210 grams per tonne silver, 0.94 g/t gold, 3.69 percent zinc?and 1.17 percent lead.

Northern Gold Mining (TSXV:NGM) and Champagne Resources?entered into?a letter of intent under which Champagne has granted Northern Gold the right to acquire all of its mining claims located in each of the Guibord, Michaud and Holloway Townships in Ontario, Canada.

European shares steady, euro climbs as "fiscal cliff" push awaited

LONDON (Reuters) - European shares were steady and the euro edged higher on Thursday, as U.S. lawmakers prepared to resume negotiations to avoid a fiscal crunch, while the yen hit a 21-month low on the prospect of drastic monetary easing.

Returning from the Christmas holiday break, European shares opened little changed at 1137 points, with London's FTSE 100 <.ftse>, Paris's CAC-40 <.fchi> and Frankfurt's DAX <.gdaxi> between 0.1 percent lower and 0.4 percent higher.

A 0.1 percent gain in U.S. stock futures suggested a firm Wall Street start. <.l><.eu><.n/>

In a sign that there may be a way to break the deadlock in the U.S. Congress, Republican House of Representatives Speaker John Boehner urged the Democrat-controlled Senate to act to pull back from the cliff and offered to at least consider any bill the upper chamber produced.

President Barack Obama will try to revive budget crisis talks which stalled last week when he returns to Washington on Thursday after cutting short his Christmas holiday in Hawaii.

"There is still hope for a last-minute deal, otherwise we're in for a correction in January. People have already priced in an agreement. Without it, the market can't stay at these levels," a Paris-based trader said.

Economists warn that the "fiscal cliff" of higher taxes and spending cuts worth $600 billion could push the world's largest economy into recession, dragging other countries with it.

Such concerns underpinned the dollar as the fiscal impasse continues to sap investor appetite for risky assets, raising the dollar's safe-haven appeal.

Against the yen, the dollar at 85.87 yen reached its highest since September 2010, with investors accelerating their yen sales after new Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said his government would pursue a bold monetary policy, a flexible fiscal policy and a growth strategy to encourage private investment.

The euro, which is being supported by a better outlook towards the euro zone, climbed 0.4 percent to $1.3266.

In commodity markets, London copper rose 1.7 percent to a one-week high of $7,932 a tonne after some positive data from China, the world's top copper buyer.

U.S. crude futures inched up 0.2 percent to $91.14 a barrel, helped by the Chinese data and also by hopes the new Japanese government's policies would spur demand. Brent crude steadied at $111.03.

With bond investors focusing on Washington, German government bond futures opened little changed at 144.72.

It changes all the time. My least favourite pose when I started (because it was so hard) is now one of my favourite poses (because now I can do it and it has taught me that things that seem impossible can be achieved by regular practice), the pose is called tiriangmukiekapadapascimottanasana

So many to choose from! I love jumping from downward dog into bhuja pidasana, I love ghaba pindasana, I love ekabhuja urdva padmasana, I love baddha padmasana, I love janu sirsasana C. I love uthita hasta padangustasana.

I do Mysore style ashtanga vinyasa yoga meditation. I've tried a few other kinds and they don't really do it for me. Only ashtanga gets me into the zone in the way that a few hours dancing or 23 dried welsh liberty caps do.

'vinyasa' means 'movement-breathing-system'. If there is a specific sequence (krama) and every movement happens on a specific breath, then it is vinyasa yoga. Ashtanga yoga is vinyasa yoga. Most classes calling themselves vinyasa classes are not true vinyasa because the instructor does not care (and never will) whether or not you really are inhaling or exhaling when you should be. Ujjayi breathing of course. If it's not Ujjayi, it's not vinyasa!

'Kundalini' yoga is any kind of yoga which 'raises your kundalini' which is another way of saying 'induces psychosis'.

You're right about Hatha - it means 'forcing meditation', the principle being that you can force just about anyone into a state of meditation with the right kind of moving and breathing whereas not everyone can be brought to meditation via more intellectual means (actually, no-one ever thought their way into meditation!)

Very true about the vinyasa yoga. That's why I stay away from the very fast paced sets, because ujjayi goes out the window. Smile I don't believe that the purpose of raising your kundalini is to induce psychosis though. It's more about raising your consciousness to the present, and putting yourself into a meditative state. I find it easier to delve into it with the mixture of repetition, willpower, and mantra.

Read this: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/23044373
And google 'crazy wisdom'.

I can assure you that the experience of psychosis and kundalini rising are one and the same, but the prognosis depends on what prior training and preparation you've had.

I do "bicycle guitaring" yoga, but when I started doing it back in the early 1980s I did not at that time realize I was doing yoga. I just did it. For me, it is a meditation in motion.

Near as I can figure, this is both an action yoga (because of the movement) and a sound yoga (because there is music involved). There may be other forms of yoga involved. I am not familiar with all the formal names of the specific yoga types.

Introducing myself

Hello, as you can see, I'm new to this site. I found this when looking for a place to RP. The truth is, I'm not that good at RPing. Sometimes I can post good stuff, but most of the time it will be mediocre. I haven't been RolePlaying for much, just one or two RPs in a off-topic forum, in a game forum, but seeing this place made me want to do it more seriously and improve.

All you need is bacon.

Woman uses thought control to eat chocolate

A woman who was diagnosed with spinocerebellar degeneration was able to feed herself once again through the help of a mind-controlled robot arm created by researchers at the University of Pittsburgh and UPMC. NBCNews.com's Dara Brown reports.

By Maggie Fox, NBC News

Jan Scheuermann knew what she wanted to do if and when she mastered the robotic arm. The?53-year-old woman, paralyzed from the neck down, was going to have some chocolate.

And she did.

Tiny electrodes implanted in her brain picked up her wishes and made the arm and hand move, researchers reported Monday in the Lancet medical journal.

Neurosurgeons have been working for years to identify individual brain cells associated with movement and thought. This is a new way of getting there, the researchers report in the Lancet medical journal.

?This is completely new territory. Every time you move, billions of neurons fire together,? said neurobiologist?Dr. Andrew Schwartz of the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, who worked on the study. ?We are starting to learn what these neurons are saying to one another.?

Jan Scheuermann, who has quadriplegia, takes a bite out of a chocolate bar she has guided into her mouth with a thought-controlled robot arm. Research assistants Brian Wodlinger, Ph.D., and Dr. Elke Brown watch in the background.

The robotic arm is an advance for prosthetics controlled by the brain. ?We are much more closely replicating natural arm and hand movement than has ever been done before,? Schwartz?said. ?We could actually decode the subject?s intention to move. That is very useful for prosthetics. There is no other way a subject can actually express intention to move.?

Since having the electrodes implanted, Scheuerman calls it "the ride of my life.?

?This is the roller coaster. This is skydiving. It?s just fabulous, and I?m enjoying every second of it," she says.

Scheuermann has a degenerative spinal disease and has been paralyzed for about nine years, Schwartz said. ?She has a spinal cord degeneration so that her condition is very similar to someone that has suffered a spinal cord injury,? Schwartz said. ?She can?t move anything below her neck.?

Schwartz and colleagues implanted two separate arrays with 96 electrodes in Scheuermann?s motor cortex, the part of the brain that initiates movement. Each one is about 1/16th of an inch long, Schwartz said, a fairly simple procedure for?brain surgeons.

Study participant Tim Hemmes (right) reaching out to his researcher, Wei Wang, M.D., Ph.D. (left), using a brain-controlled prosthetic arm. Also pictured: Research team member Jennifer L. Collinger, Ph.D and Katie Schaffer.

?You don?t feel it," Schwartz said.?"There are a lot of patients undergoing procedures for Parkinson?s disease in which they implant electrodes in the middle of your brain to stimulate it order to relieve symptoms. It?s much more invasive than this and yet it?s routine.?

After the implant, Scheuermann's training started. The arm is mounted on a stand near Scheuerman?s wheelchair. She gradually learned to control the arm by thinking about what she wanted it to do. After 13 years, the brain circuits were still there, Schwartz said.

?The second day of the experiment, she was able to move the prosthetic,? Schwartz said. ?I sort of expected that to happen. My colleagues were much more skeptical. We had a bet that she could do it the first day. I lost the bet, and ended up buying ice cream for everybody.?

Scheuermann learned to pick up a rock, stack cones and eventually fed herself a candy bar. You can see video of the arm here.

?What we want to do sometime in the near future is mount the arm in her wheelchair so she can take it around with her and use it in her house,? Schwartz said.

Several other teams of researchers were working on mind-controlled prosthetics, but this one uses different computer programs, says Schwartz. The whole project is funded by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, or DARPA. The device cost several hundred thousand dollars but with more production the price would come down, Schwartz says.

?This prosthetic arm was developed with the returning war veterans in mind,? he said. But amputees won?t be getting brain implants any time soon, he said, because doctors and the Food and Drug Administration won?t approve surgery that could further injure people who have already lost limbs.

For now, amputees may have to make do with prosthetics powered by muscle movements.

One downside: After about a year, the brain begins to build scar tissue around the implants and the signal starts to die out. Schwartz says his team is working on making implants with materials the brain won?t reject as foreign.

?This bioinspired brain-machine interface is a remarkable technological and biomedical achievement. Though plenty of challenges lie ahead, these sorts of systems are rapidly approaching the point of clinical fruition,? Gr?goire Courtine of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in?Lausanne and colleagues wrote in a commentary on the study.

Increasing Traffic On a Budget | Simplicity Marketing, Inc.

The volume of traffic an online business receives directly influences it?s success or failure. The more traffic a site gets, the higher percentage of potential sales there are. In days past, it was fairly easy to gain traffic through forced link building methods and buying cheap links. Today, most of those methods don?t work and can actually have a negative effect on your business. Instead, you will want to focus your attention on natural link building and the great thing about this method is you can do it with little to no budget. Here are a few cost effective ways to increase your website traffic.

Social Networking ? It?s free and takes very little time once you have everything set up. The key to using social networking to build traffic is the way you interact with your followers. It isn?t enough to just set up a profile with your business information. Nor can you post updates but never respond to comments. In order for social networking to work for your business, you need to have a compelling profile, interesting posts and you must interact with your followers.

Blog Commenting ? Again, think natural traffic. Blog commenting doesn?t mean spamming blogs with irrelevant comments with links to your site. Nor does it mean commenting on blogs that have nothing to do with your industry. To get the most traffic from blog commenting, you should first locate active blogs within your industry. Look for ones that have similar beliefs as you. Then follow that blog, get to know the content and post appropriate, relevant comments when you have something note worthy to say. "Great post! I agree with what you said" is not an appropriate comment. Remember, your comments are a reflection of you and your business. If your comments are junk, people will naturally assume your business is junk too.

Guest Blogging ? Providing well written content on someone else?s site is one of the best ways to quickly grow your traffic. Guest blogging not only helps you build traffic, it also helps to establish you as an expert and it allows you to build relationships not only with website owners where you guest blog but with their audience as well. Before you start writing your guest blog posts, consider how your posts will benefit the other person?s business and how they will best benefit yours. Sometimes your posts may be more beneficial to the host blog offering great information with only a reference to your business. Other times they might talk more about your specific thoughts, services or findings and include links to resources and such on your site. If you plan to write a series of blog posts for someone, consider mixing your posts so both you and your host will have equal benefits.

Affiliates ? Having an affiliate program means letting other people do the hard work for you and you only pay for results. For a percentage of sales they send your way, affiliates will drive traffic to your business. Starting an affiliate program isn?t hard and it doesn?t cost much. You can start out small and build your affiliate program up as you go along.

These are just four ways you can increase traffic with little or no budget. By creating goals and planning ahead, you can quickly see great results from the above methods.

Secretary of state faints, sustains concussion

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton, who skipped an overseas trip this past week because of a stomach virus, sustained a concussion after fainting, the State Department said Saturday.

The 65-year-old Clinton, who's expected to leave her job soon after serving as America's top diplomat during President Barack Obama's first term, is recovering at home after the incident last week and is being monitored by doctors, according to a statement by aide Philippe Reines.

No further details were immediately available.

The statement said Clinton was dehydrated because of the virus and that she fainted and sustained a concussion. She will continue to work from home in the week ahead and looks forward to being back in the office "soon," the statement said.

Congressional aides do not expect her to testify as scheduled at congressional hearings on Thursday into the Sept. 11 attack against a U.S. diplomatic outpost in Benghazi, Libya, that killed four Americans, including the U.S. ambassador.

The aides spoke on condition of anonymity because they weren't authorized to publicly discuss Clinton's status.

Clinton backed out of a trip to North Africa and the Persian Gulf on Monday because she was sick. She caught the virus during a recent visit to Europe.

She's known for her grueling travel schedule and is the most traveled secretary of state, having visited 112 countries while in the job.

Airline's workers threaten no smiles, no booze

16 hrs.

Flight attendants at Hong Kong airline Cathay Pacific Airways are threatening to withhold food, alcohol and even smiles from passengers during the Christmas holidays over a pay dispute, a union official said Thursday.

Cabin staff at the airline, which has a reputation for top-notch service, voted at a union meeting this week in favor of industrial action that could also result in flight delays.

The union is demanding a 5 percent pay increase but the airline, which is struggling to cut costs after posting a first-half loss of 935 million Hong Kong dollars ($120.5 million), has offered 2 percent and a 13th month bonus.

The Cathay Pacific Airways Flight Attendants Union will soon announce when the action approved in the vote will be carried out, General Secretary Tsang Kwok-fung said.

"We may not provide alcoholic drinks to our passengers, or we may not even provide meals to passengers," in which case the union would advise travelers to bring their own food and drinks, said Tsang.

Limited service could also include withholding smiles and greetings from passengers.

"We cannot smile because of the situation, because of how the company treats us," Tsang said.

The union is also considering working to rule, which involves doing no more than the minimum work required in contracts and precisely following safety regulations. Such tactics could include strictly enforcing size limits on hand luggage or waiting for all cleaning staff to leave the plane before boarding. The measures could delay flights by 20 to 30 minutes, Tsang said.

Some 1,600 of the union's nearly 6,000 members voted on Monday for industrial action after negotiations with the airline broke down.

The union is also considering a strike as a last resort, but not until the new year.

Cathay took out ads in Hong Kong newspapers on Thursday saying it's waiting to hear back from the union on an invitation to hold further talks. "We fully understand how important it is not to disrupt passengers at this busy time," the airline said.

The airline has "comprehensive contingency plans" to ensure normal operations over the holidays, Chief Operating Officer Ivan Chu said at a press briefing. He wouldn't give details.?

Children Keep Active In Science - Reference and Education ...

December 10th, 2012 by admin

At my high school reunion last week, I ran into an old friend. He and I had a biology class together when we were young. He told me that summer activities were a wonderful activity for youngsters, and that the best activities were science summer camps. He said that his children had attended some that were very enriching to their knowledge of science. He said that they were well worth the money that they cost, and they could meet others there.

Tualatin's Stafford Hills Club offers new tennis courts, high-tech gym ...

TUALATIN -- Tualatin resident Deborah Reiss had to commute to Lake Oswego to play tennis every week until a new wellness center opened five minutes from her home.

Stafford Hills Club opened last week at 5916 S.W. Nyberg Lane with what are thought to be the first indoor tennis courts built by a fitness center in the Southwest suburbs in nearly 30 years. ?

"My focus is tennis, so it's important to me to have nice, new courts," said Reiss, 57, "and the philosophy of this place is all about excellence."

The 95,000-square-foot club exudes excellence in its seven indoor tennis courts, three outdoor courts, a resort-style pool, a racquet shop and the highest of high-tech gym equipment.

Amenities range from free childcare to the ice-cold water with floating lemon slices available at the spotless granite reception desk.

Owners Jim Zupancic, a Lake Oswego land-use attorney, and his wife, Marla, say they wanted to create a fitness club where people could gather, socialize and attend wellness-based events.

They recruited Jeff Breit, who has an extensive background in hospitality and five-star private clubs, to be general manager.

The 16-acre campus, valued at about $20 million, includes buildings that are in the process of becoming LEED certified and walking trails through the surrounding wetlands at Browns Ferry Park. ?

The club focuses on overall wellness, through fitness equipment and classes, a salon and spa, cafe, childcare, physical therapy and lifestyle coaching.

It takes community building a step further by providing space for members to meet and socialize in the form of book clubs, cooking classes, networking events and other group activities.

"We ask people to tell us who they are," Breit said. "We want a 'welcome home' vibe."

The tennis courts are a major selling point for area residents such as Reiss and Kari Evans,? 52, who said she was hoping for a state-of-the-art tennis center and spa closer to her workplace in Tualatin.

Most other local indoor centers -- including Portland's Multnomah Athletic Club, the Tualatin Hills Tennis Center in Beaverton and the Mountain Park Racquet Club in Lake Oswego -- are at least a quarter-century old, though all report they update their courts every few years. Sunset Athletic Club in Cedar Mill says they built three indoor courts in 2005.

Stafford Hills has seven indoor courts and three outdoor courts, modeled after the National Tennis Center in Flushing, N.Y. A skybox lets spectators watch the indoor courts, and the ceiling lights are designed to reflect light from the courts for good visibility.

Tennis professionals Bill Fletcher? and Suzie Matzenauer, a former nationally ranked college player, will lead the tennis program. The two have decades of experience playing and coaching and are nationally recognized for the sport.

"There's no way I'm going somewhere else," Evans said. The high-technology trend continues with Technogym fitness equipment designed to monitor individual results.

When members join, the club creates an electronic profile and stores it in the overall database and individual flash drives. Members can access their profiles, which contain workout logs, appointments and notes from physical therapists or trainers, at all machines via the flash drive.

The club has on-site medical resources that provide cardiac evaluations, sports-medicine health screenings and physical therapy. Wellness director Taryn Lust said the club also offered stress management courses, speakers and dietitians.

Membership packages vary; a basic adult initiation fee with all access is $900, plus $125 per month. A comparable initiation fee for a family would be $2,000, plus $265 per month.

So far, around 1,200 members have joined the club, which makes Breit confident.

"I'm excited to take part in something built from the ground up that helps people," he said.

Quad/Graphics declares $2 special dividend

SUSSEX, Wis. (AP) -- Shares of printing company Quad/Graphics Inc. popped on Friday after it declared a $2 special dividend, to be paid later this month, and raised its quarterly payout by 20 percent.

Many companies have declared special year-end dividends or moved planned dividend payments into late 2012 from early 2013 to shield investors from potentially having to pay higher taxes on dividend income.

Quad/Graphics will pay the $2 dividend Dec. 28 to shareholders of record on Dec. 24.

Since 2003, investors have paid a maximum 15 percent on dividend income. But that historically low rate will expire in January unless Congress and President Barack Obama reach a compromise on taxes and government spending. As it stands, dividends will be taxed as ordinary income in 2013, the same as wages, so rates will go up depending on which income bracket a taxpayer is in. For the highest earners, the dividend rate would jump to 43.4 percent.

The increase in the regular quarterly dividend, to 30 cents from 25 cents, will start in the first quarter of 2013.

Shares of the Sussex, Wis., company rose $2.78, or 17 percent, to $19.49 in afternoon trading.
