(AP) ? Anderson Cooper revealed on Monday that he is gay, ending years of reluctance to talk about his personal life in public.

The CNN journalist wrote in an online letter that he had kept his sexual orientation private for personal and professional reasons, but came to think that remaining silent had given some people a mistaken impression that he was ashamed.

"The fact is, I'm gay, always have been, always will be, and I couldn't be any more happy, comfortable with myself and proud," he wrote in the letter, published by Andrew Sullivan of the Daily Beast.

Cooper, the son of Gloria Vanderbilt, had long been the subject of rumors about his sexual orientation. He said that in a perfect world, it wouldn't be anyone's business, but that there is value in "standing up and being counted."

"I still consider myself a reserved person and I hope this doesn't mean an end to a small amount of personal space," he wrote. "But I do think visibility is important, more important than preserving my reporter's shield of privacy."

CNN said it would not comment, and that Cooper was on assignment and there were no plans for Cooper to discuss it on the air.

Few national television news reporters have publicly acknowledged being gay, with MSNBC's Rachel Maddow and CNN's Don Lemon perhaps the best known.

Cooper's show, "Anderson Cooper 360," received an award this year from the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation.

"Even prior to coming out publicly, Anderson's terrific work has raised awareness of inequalities facing LGBT people, said GLAAD President Herndon Graddick. "He's a role model to millions and now will inspire countless others."

Gift will honor Joseph Kirsner, founder of the Gastro-Intestinal Research Foundation

The Taxman Family Foundation will donate $2.5 million to support the training of specialists in the study and treatment of digestive disease at the University of Chicago Medicine.

The gift was announced Saturday evening at the annual fundraising event for the Gastro-Intestinal Research Foundation (GIRF). It will honor Joseph B. Kirsner, MD, PhD, the Louis Block Distinguished Service Professor of Medicine at the University of Chicago, who helped establish GIRF in 1962.

"This magnanimous gift is a fitting tribute to the seminal role played by Dr. Joseph Kirsner to further our understanding of gastrointestinal health and disease and to advocate for every patient he ever cared for," said Kenneth S. Polonsky, MD, Dean of the Biological Sciences Division and the Pritzker School of Medicine and Executive Vice President of Medical Affairs at the University of Chicago. "For more than 60 years, Joe Kirsner was a model in the care of the patient, a skill he passed on to his students, and in the study of complex disease. This gift will extend that legacy. We are very appreciative that the Taxman Foundation has agreed to honor Dr. Kirsner in this manner and would also like to acknowledge the critical role played by the Gastro-Intestinal Research Foundation in facilitating this gift. "

The gift will support an endowed fellowship that will enable young physician-scientists of high promise to continue their clinical training while developing research skills and experience. It will support research and faculty recruitment initiatives, and it will help build the Joseph B. Kirsner faculty reception area in the medical center's New Hospital Pavilion, which will open in early 2013.

"Very few people have had an impact on me, or on the world, like Dr. Joseph Kirsner," said Seymour Taxman, CEO and founder of the Chicago-based Taxman Corporation. "He has helped thousands of patients in their personal battles against digestive disorders. He also has trained generations of experts in the field. It is an honor for my wife and me to help extend his reach and continue this profound legacy."

Kirsner has been an influential physician at the University of Chicago since his arrival in August 1935 as an assistant in medicine. Except for his time in the Army during World War II, he taught aspiring doctors, conducted medical research and took care of patients for almost 70 years. He stopped seeing patients seven years ago, at age 95. He published more than 750 scientific papers and 18 books, including six editions of his authoritative textbook, "Inflammatory Bowel Disease." He trained more than 200 of the field's leading specialists.

In 1962, a collection of Kirsner's grateful patients formed the Gastro-Intestinal Research Foundation, which has provided nearly $30 million to support gastrointestinal research at the University, including $2 million for the 17,000-square-foot Joseph B. Kirsner Center for the Study of Digestive Diseases, which opened in the medical center in 1986. Kirsner's contributions solidified the medical center's reputation as a national leader in the treatment and study of gastrointestinal disease. U.S. News & World Report has consistently ranked the University of Chicago Medical Center's GI section as among the top 10 in the country for more than 20 years.

Taxman, a longtime member of the GIRF board, is a pioneer in bringing suburban-style commercial development to the city. The Chicago-based Taxman Corporation develops neighborhood and community retail properties. Since its inception, the Corporation has developed nearly 85 shopping centers, drugstores, supermarkets, suburban properties, and other properties throughout the city.

Russia's Bashneft wins energy deal in Iraq

(AP) ? Iraq has awarded Russian oil giant Bashneft rights to explore for oil in the south of the country after nearly one month of negotiations, a senior Baghdad official said on Sunday, bringing the total number of Russian companies with oil deals in Iraq to three.

Bashneft and Vietnam's PetroVietnam were part of a consortium led by UK's Premier to bid for Block 12 in Iraq's fourth energy bidding round in May. The consortium rejected the government's proposed fee of $5 per barrel of oil equivalent as too low and sought $9.85 for each barrel.

The deputy director of the Oil Ministry's contracts department, Sabah al-Saidi, said that the ministry reached a separate agreement with Bashneft last week after it accepted the $5 fee.

The 8,000-square-kilometer (3,100-square-mile) block is in the southern provinces of Muthanna and Najaf.

The May auction was Iraq's fourth since 2009 and was meant to attract foreign investment in the country's crucial energy sector, particularly natural gas exploration. It drew lukewarm response from foreign companies due to tough contract terms. Out of 12 exploration blocks were on offer only three were awarded.

Only areas with undetermined hydrocarbon resources were on offer, while previously the rights to known large and medium oil and gas fields were being auctioned off. Iraq has offered only service contracts in which companies are paid a flat fee, rather than deals in which they receive a share of the hydrocarbons found.

The three successful bids were made by consortiums led by Kuwait Energy, Russia's Lukoil and Pakistan Petroleum.

Kuwait Energy with its partners, Turkey's TPAO and the UAE's Dragon Oil, will explore for oil in southern Basra province and will be paid $6.24 for each barrel of oil equivalent it finds. Russia's Lukoil and Japan's Inpex Corp. will explore for oil in southern Iraq and will be paid $5.99 for each barrel of oil equivalent they find and Pakistan Petroleum will search for natural gas in the east of the country and is to receive $5.38 for each barrel of oil equivalent.

All three deals will be initially signed in mid-July and will be sent to the Cabinet for final approval, al-Saidi said. The fourth deal could be initially signed later this month, he added.

Iraq is trying to build up its energy sector, hit by years of neglect and violence, including the turmoil following the ouster of Saddam Hussein in 2003. Iraq holds the world's fourth largest oil reserves of 143.1 billion barrels, and oil revenues cover nearly 95 percent of the country's local budget.

Since 2008, Iraq has awarded 15 oil and gas deals to international energy companies, the first major investments in the country's energy industry in more than three decades.

Daily oil production stands at about 3 million barrels. Iraq initially set a target of 12 million barrels a day by 2017, but it is now considering a downward revision to fewer than 10 million barrels, in part because of infrastructure bottlenecks.

Rooms with Views: Olympic Village ready to go

LONDON (AP) ? Usain Bolt can thank me anytime for helping ensure that he gets a good night's sleep at this summer's London Olympics.

Organizers held a slumber party this weekend, opening the big glass doors and immense dining halls of the Athletes' Village to several hundred journalists, local officials and assorted others in a trial run ? giving games planners a chance to work out the glitches before the Olympians arrive. I was a willing guinea pig.

This wasn't a stress test really. Stress comes in just a few weeks when 16,000 athletes and officials come rolling in, a flag-waving tide of youth and vigor, ready to play. No, no, this was just a little warm up trot ? and let's be frank ? a big party at a way above average location.

"It's to help us flesh out the glitches," said Nigel Garfitt, the director of the village and games services.

There were a few of those. The chatter at the breakfast table Saturday morning, particularly at the journalist end, was about all the things that went wrong. There was no water in my room for example (whoops!) and a village crew thought that 3:30 a.m. was a good time to dig up paving stones outside my window.

That's why Usain, the word-famous Jamaican sprinter, can thank me, because it gives me a chance to make this suggestion to Sebastian Coe, the head of the organizing committee: Please don't dig up the street in the middle of the night! Olympians are slumbering.

That said, since this is the closest I'll ever come to being an Olympian, these minor mishaps must be taken in stride, particularly as it is clear that the village is within a whisker of being ready. For this village there will be no disasters in landscaping such as occurred in the Athens Olympics, where the outside of many venues were bare. In London, the grass is manicured within an inch of its existence ? you weren't even allowed to walk on its lush cushiness unless you ditched your shoes.

Much of the village is that way ? it looks as if it were lifted from an architectural drawing and broadcast on a big empty space. It's kind of boxy and utilitarian, but very tidy. Its monochrome-ness will offer a good backdrop for the athletes, who will drape flags from the balconies and transform it with color.

The rooms are spare but designed first and foremost with the athletes in mind. Beds for the tall and small. Mattresses wear-tested by former Olympians. Bedside lamps that work. Blackout curtains to make the room dark should the sun ever decide to shine in this light-deprived nation.

The duvets feature pictograms of the Olympic sports, and the communal areas offer sofas in electric aqua with hot pink cushions.

The televisions will feature an Olympic broadcast channel showing the action but no commentary. There's WiFi and a laundrette in the basement.

There are no kitchens ? but who needs to cook? Just a short stroll away, in the shadow of the basketball arena known as "the Meringue," is the massive dining facility, which will operate for 24 hours a day and seat 5,000 at a time.

The size of six American football fields, it features cuisine from each of the continents, and includes a Halal pod ? food prepared in compliance with Islamic guidelines. It is the pride and joy of Jan Matthews, the head of catering.

Matthews once ran catering for the British army in Germany and knows a thing or two about serving on a huge scale. That's kind of necessary, as this is a place where having seconds or sixths is just fine. Portion sizes are up to the athletes. No charge.

Non-Olympians won't really get a chance to eat here, unless they have some super special reason to be with a team. Heads of state are known to pull up trays with their squads, but there's no VIP treatment for them here.

"This is about the athletes," she said. "It's not about anyone else."

Besides food, other diversions and services beckon along tidy paths with sporty names such as Champions Walk, Medals Way or Celebration Avenue. There is a post office, a nail bar, a Lloyds Bank, and hairdressers where free styling and shaves are on offer.

Judging by past games, athletes will get the Olympic rings shaved into their hair, according to Emily Brett, the athletes' services manager.

But just to make sure no one gets bored, there's also a recreation zone called The Globe, after the theater most closely associated with William Shakespeare. It has sort of a pub-like feel, though no alcohol will be served, making it unpub-like to anyone who lives in Britain, but never mind.

It features light boxes that say things like "fun fun fun," ''Wow" and "Boogie." There's a bar, a stage, a music studio, pool tables, a computer gaming area and TVs.

"It is going to be the buzziest place in the Athletes' Village," Brett said.

Just over 200 national Olympic committees will be represented, and each will get a little welcoming ceremony all their own that features the playing of national anthems. With so many athletes and committees, it may take as long as four days to run through them all. But there will be one for everyone, as organizers want to make it special for the athletes ? the people without whom there wouldn't be any games.

As one might expect at an event about the Athletes' Village, concerns about the competitors' happiness came up a lot. But the slumber party was also about the thousands of people who make up an Olympics ? the caterers, the transport workers, the firefighters and so on who have worked ? some for many years ? on a project whose primary goal is to show Britain at its most welcoming.

"We wanted to use it as a thank you to them," Garfitt said before he gleefully described all the forms he would scoop up with "feedback," on the event.

"It makes it all real," he said.
