How full moons got their peculiar names

The first full moon of 2013 will light up the night sky tonight (Jan. 26), but did you know it's a full moon of many names?

Full moon names date back to Native American tribes of a few hundred years ago who lived in what is now the northern and eastern United States. Those tribes kept track of the seasons by giving distinctive names to each recurring full moon. Their names were applied to the entire month in which each occurred.

There were some variations in the moon names, but, in general, the same ones were used throughout the Algonquin tribes from New England on west to Lake Superior. European settlers followed their own customs and created some of their own names. Since the lunar (or "synodic") month is roughly 29.5 days in length on average, the dates of the full moon shift from year to year.

Here is a listing of all of the full moon names, as well as the dates and times for 2013. Unless otherwise noted, all times are for the Eastern time zone:

Jan. 26, 11:38 p.m. EST ?Full Wolf Moon: Amid the zero cold and deep snows of midwinter, the wolf packs howled hungrily outside Indian villages.? It was also known as the Old Moon or the Moon after Yule.? In some tribes this was the Full Snow Moon; most applied that name to the next moon. [Full Moon: Why Does It Happen? (Video)]

Feb. 25, 3:26 p.m. EST ?Full Snow Moon: Usually the heaviest snows fall in this month. Hunting becomes very difficult, and, hence, to some tribes this was the Full Hunger Moon.?

March 27, 5:27 a.m. EDT ?Full Worm Moon: In this month the ground softens and the earthworm casts reappear, inviting the return of the robins. The more northern tribes knew this as the Full Crow Moon, when the cawing of crows signals the end of winter, or the Full Crust Moon, because the snow cover becomes crusted from thawing by day and freezing at night. In 2013, this is also the Paschal Full Moon? the first full moon of the spring season. The first Sunday following the paschal moon is Easter Sunday, which indeed will be observed four days later on Sunday, March 31.

April 25, 3:57 p.m. EDT ?Full Pink Moon: The grass pink or wild phlox is one of the earliest widespread flowers of the spring. Other names were the Full Sprouting Grass Moon, the Egg Moon and ? among coastal tribes ? the Full Fish Moon, when the shad come upstream to spawn. The moon will also undergo a very slight partial lunar eclipse, which will be visible from the Eastern Hemisphere, but not from North America. At its peak, less than 1.5 percent of the moon's diameter will be immersed in the Earth?s umbral shadow; a very underwhelming event to say the least.

May 25, 12:25 a.m. EDT ?Full Flower Moon: Flowers are now abundant everywhere. It was also known as the Full Corn Planting Moon or the Milk Moon. The moon will also undergo a penumbral lunar eclipse, but the passage of the moon's disk into the Earth's shadow will result in one of the slightest eclipses of all, administering a mere touch of penumbral shadow at the northernmost part of the lunar limb.

June 23, 7:32 a.m. EDT ?Full Strawberry Moon: Strawberry-picking season peaks during this month.? Europeans called this the Rose Moon. The moon will also arrive at perigee only 32 minutes earlier, at 7 a.m. EDT at a distance of 221,824 miles (356,991 kilometers) from Earth. So this is the biggest full moon of 2013. Very high ocean tides can be expected during the next two or three days, thanks to the coincidence of perigee with the full moon.?

July 22, 2:16 p.m. EDT?Full Buck Moon: Named for when the new antlers of buck deer push out from their foreheads in coatings of velvety fur. It was also often called the Full Thunder Moon, thunderstorms now being most frequent. Sometimes it's also called the Full Hay Moon.

Aug. 20, 9:45 p.m. EDT ?Full Sturgeon Moon: This large fish of the Great Lakes and other major bodies of water like Lake Champlain is most readily caught at this time. A few tribes knew it as the Full Red Moon, because when the moon rises it looks reddish through a sultry haze. It was also known as ?the Green Corn Moon or Grain Moon.

Sept. 19, 7:13 a.m. EDT ?Full Harvest Moon: Traditionally, this designation goes to the full moon that occurs closest to the autumnal (fall) equinox. The Harvest Moon usually comes in September, but (on average) once or twice a decade it will fall in early October.? At the peak of the harvest, farmers can work into the night by the light of this moon.?

Usually the moon rises an average of 50 minutes later each night, but for the few nights around the Harvest Moon, the moon seems to rise at nearly the same time each night: just 25 to 30 minutes later across the U.S., and only 10 to 20 minutes later for much of Canada and Europe. Corn, pumpkins, squash, beans and wild rice ? the chief Indian staples ? are now ready for gathering.

Oct. 18, 7:38 p.m. EDT ?Full Hunters' Moon: With the leaves falling and the deer fattened, it's now time to hunt.? Since the fields have been reaped, hunters can ride over the stubble, and can more easily see the fox, as well as other animals, which can be caught for a thanksgiving banquet after the harvest.?

A penumbral lunar eclipse will also take place. Perhaps for some minutes centered on the time of greatest eclipse (7:50 p.m. EDT) might the penumbra be marginally detectable over the moon?s southernmost limb; for at that moment the penumbral magnitude will reach 76.5 percent.? Those living across the eastern half of North America might see some evidence of this faint penumbral shading soon after local moonrise.

Nov. 17, 10:16 a.m. EST ?Full Beaver Moon: At this point of the year, it's time to set beaver traps before the swamps freeze to ensure a supply of warm winter furs. Another interpretation suggests that the name Beaver Full Moon came from the fact that the beavers are now active in their preparation for winter. It's also called the Frosty Moon.

Dec. 17, 4:28 a.m. EST ?Full Cold Moon: On occasion, this moon was also called the Moon Before Yule. December is also the month the winter cold fastens its grip. Sometimes this moon is referred to as the Full Long Nights Moon and the term "Long Night" Moon is a very appropriate name because the nights are now indeed long and the moon is above the horizon a long time. This particular full moon makes its highest arc across the night sky because it's diametrically opposite to the low sun.?

WASHINGTON ? Students with disabilities must be given a fair shot to play on a traditional sports team or have their own leagues, the Education Department says.

Disabled students who want to play for their school could join traditional teams if officials can make ?reasonable modifications? to accommodate them. If those adjustments would fundamentally alter a sport or give the student an advantage, the department is directing the school to create parallel athletic programs that have comparable standing to traditional programs.

?Sports can provide invaluable lessons in discipline, selflessness, passion and courage, and this guidance will help schools ensure that students with disabilities have an equal opportunity to benefit from the life lessons they can learn on the playing field or on the court,? Education Secretary Arne Duncan said in a statement announcing the new guidance Friday.

The groundbreaking order is reminiscent of the Title IX expansion of athletic opportunities for girls and women four decades ago and could bring sweeping changes to school budgets and locker rooms for years to come.

Activists cheered the changes.

?This is a landmark moment for students with disabilities. This will do for students with disabilities what Title IX did for women,? said Terri Lakowski, who for a decade led a coalition pushing for the changes. ?This is a huge victory.?

It?s not clear whether the new guidelines will spark a sudden uptick in sports participation. There was a big increase in female participation in sports after Title IX guidance instructed schools to treat female athletics on par with male teams. That led many schools to cut some men?s teams, arguing that it was necessary to be able to pay for women?s teams.

Education Department officials emphasized they did not intend to change sports traditions dramatically or guarantee students with disabilities a spot on competitive teams. Instead, they insisted schools may not exclude students based on their disabilities if they can keep up with their classmates.

Federal laws, including the 1973 Rehabilitation Act and the Individuals With Disabilities Education Act, require states to provide a free public education to all students and prohibit schools that receive federal money from discriminating against students with disabilities. Going further, the new directive from the Education Department?s civil rights division explicitly tells schools and colleges that access to interscholastic, intramural and intercollegiate athletics is a right.

The department suggests minor accommodations to incorporate students with disabilities onto sports teams. For instance, track and field officials could use a visual cue for a deaf runner to begin a race.

Some states already offer such programs. Maryland, for instance, passed a law in 2008 that required schools to create equal opportunities for students with disabilities to participate in physical education programs and play on traditional athletic teams. And Minnesota awards state titles for disabled student athletes in six sports.

Increasingly, those with disabilities are finding spots on their schools? teams.

?I heard about some of the other people who joined their track teams in other states. I wanted to try to do that,? said Casey Followay, 15, of Wooster, Ohio, who competes on his high school track team in a racing wheelchair.

Current rules require Followay to race on his own, without competitors running alongside him. He said he hopes the Education Department guidance will change that and he can compete against runners.

?It?s going to give me the chance to compete against kids at my level,? he said.

Some cautioned that progress would come in fits and starts initially.

?Is it easy? No,? said Brad Hedrick, director of disability services at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and himself a hall-of-famer in the National Wheelchair Basketball Association. ?In most places, you?re beginning from an inertial moment. But it is feasible and possible that a meaningful and viable programming can be created.?

Diet, parental behavior and preschool can boost children's IQ

Jan. 25, 2013 ? Supplementing children's diets with fish oil, enrolling them in quality preschool, and engaging them in interactive reading all turn out to be effective ways to raise a young child's intelligence, according to a new report published in Perspectives on Psychological Science, a journal of the Association for Psychological Science.

Using a technique called meta-analysis, a team led by John Protzko, a doctoral student at the NYU Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development, combined the findings from existing studies to evaluate the overall effectiveness of each type of intervention. In collaboration with NYU Steinhardt professors Joshua Aronson and Clancy Blair, leaders in the field of intelligence, Protzko analyzed the best available studies involving samples of children from birth and kindergarten from their newlyassembled "Database of Raising Intelligence."

"Our aim in creating this database is to learn what works and what doesn't work to raise people's intelligence," said Protzko. "For too long, findings have been disconnected and scattered throughout a wide variety of journals. The broad consensus about what works is founded on only two or three very high-profile studies."

All of the studies in this database rely on a normal population (participants without clinical diagnoses of intellectual disabilities), focus on interventions that are sustained over time, use widely accepted measures of intelligence, and, most importantly, are randomly controlled trials (participants selected at random to receive one of the interventions).

"The larger goal here is to understand the nature of intelligence, and if and how it can be nurtured at every stage of development," said Aronson, Protzko's advisor. "This is just a first step in a long process of understanding. It is by no means the last word. In fact, one of the main conclusions is how little high quality research exists in the field and how much more needs to be done."

Overall, the results of the meta-analyses indicated that certain dietary and environmental interventions can be effective in raising children's IQ.

Supplementing pregnant women and newborns with long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids, foods rich in Omega-3, were found to boost children's IQ by more than 3.5 points. These essential fatty acids may help raise intelligence by providing the building blocks for nerve cell development that the body cannot produce on its own.

There is insufficient research, however, to determine whether other types of supplements -- including iron, B-complex vitamins, riboflavin, thiamine, niacin, and zinc -- have beneficial effects on intelligence.

Enrolling an economically disadvantaged child into an early education intervention was found to raise his or her IQ by more than four points; interventions that specifically included a center-based education component raised a child's IQ by more than seven points.

The researchers hypothesize that early education interventions may help to raise children's IQ by increasing their exposure to complex environments that are cognitively stimulating and demanding. It's not clear, however, whether these results apply more broadly to kids from different socioeconomic backgrounds.

Surprisingly, Protzko, Aronson, and Blair found no evidence to support the idea that early education interventions that take place earlier in childhood are more effective than those that begin later.

Interventions focused on interactive reading -- teaching parents how to engage their children while reading with them -- were found to raise children's IQ by over 6 points. These interventions do not seem to have an effect for children over 4 years old, suggesting that the interventions may accelerate language development, which, in turn, boosts IQ.

Sending a child to preschool was found to raise his or her IQ by more than four points, and preschools that include a language development component were found to boost IQ by more than seven points. The link between preschool and intelligence could be a function of increased exposure to language or the result of the overall cognitive complexity of the preschool environment.

"Our current findings strengthen earlier conclusions that complex environments build intelligence, but do cast doubt on others, including evidence that earlier interventions are always most effective," Protzko explained. "Overall, identifying the link between essential fatty acids and intelligence gives rise to tantalizing new questions for future research and we look forward to exploring this finding."

Cuba gets hard-wired Internet to outside world

HAVANA ??Cuba's state telecom monopoly confirmed Thursday that the island's first hard-wired Internet connection to the outside world has been activated, but said it won't lead to an immediate increase in access.

In a statement published in Communist Party newspaper Granma and other official media, ETECSA broke its long silence on the ALBA-1 fiber-optic cable, which island officials once boasted would increase capacity 3,000-fold.

Until now Cuba's Internet has been strictly via ponderous satellite links, and out of reach for the great majority of islanders. ETECSA said the new cable has been operational since August, initially carrying international voice calls, and the company has been conducting data traffic tests on the cable since Jan. 10.

"When the testing process concludes, the submarine cable being put into operation will not mean that possibilities for access will automatically multiply," ETECSA said.

"It will be necessary to invest in internal telecommunications infrastructure," the company said, adding that even then the goal is "gradual growth of a service that we offer mostly for free and with social aims in mind."

The $70 million ALBA-1 arrived on the island from Venezuela in February 2011 to great hoopla, but officials soon stopped mentioning the cable amid rumors of mismanagement and corruption involving the project.

Its status was unknown until this week, when U.S. Internet analysis firm Renesys documented evidence of faster data traffic to Cuba and concluded that the cable had been switched on.

Dissident blogger Yoani Sanchez, an advocate for wider Internet dissemination, questioned whether the government would have said anything about the cable if Renesys and foreign media had not reported about it.

"(Hashtag) Granma says now it's necessary to build infrastructure for the (hashtag) FiberOpticCable to provide service!" she tweeted. "And what were they doing the past two years?"

Cuba has the second-worst Internet connectivity rate in the world, according to one study.

According to government statistics, about 16 percent of islanders have some online access, usually through their school or workplace and often just to an Intranet that also has email capability.

Just 2.9 percent of Cubans report having full access to the World Wide Web. However outside observers say the true number is more like 5 to 10 percent accounting for underreporting of dial-up minutes resold on the black market.

Japan government panel: need to achieve primary budget surplus

TOKYO (Reuters) - Japan's government should stick with fiscal discipline targets that aim to return the budget to a primary surplus by fiscal year 2020 to ensure trust in public finances, a leading government panel said on Tuesday.

The government should also limit new bond issuance as much as possible when compiling the budget for fiscal 2013 to maintain trust in the government bond market, the Council on Economic and Fiscal Policy (CEFP) said, according to a draft distributed to reporters.

The CEFP also reiterated that the government plans to lay out more detailed plans to improve public finances by the middle of this year, as Prime Minister Shinzo Abe embarks on a bold plan to end deflation with large-scale fiscal spending and aggressive monetary easing.

Abe's government faces a delicate task because pledges to increase fiscal spending could cause bond yields to rise, which could hurt the economic outlook.

Japan's government has been aiming to halve the ratio of the primary budget deficit to gross domestic product in fiscal 2015 from the level in fiscal 2010. A primary budget balance excludes debt servicing costs and income from bond sales.

The next step is to achieve a primary budget surplus, which is likely to require major spending cuts and steps to increase revenue as Japan's public debt burden is already the worst among major economies at more than twice the size of its $5 trillion economy.

For fiscal 2013, which starts in April, Finance Minister Taro Aso has said he does not want new bond issuance to exceed the 44 trillion yen ($490 billion) initially planned for the current fiscal year.

Ex-SC Gov. Sanford done apologizing, ready to run

CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) ? Former South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford, whose political career was derailed four years ago because of his affair with an Argentine woman, is attempting an improbable comeback.

Once mentioned as a potential 2012 GOP presidential contender, the 52-year-old Republican announced Wednesday he will run for his old congressional seat in his home district along the South Carolina coast. Sanford, a penny-pinching conservative long before the tea party movement, said he is done apologizing for the affair and wants to restore "fiscal sanity" to Washington. He believes voters are ready to give him another shot in office.

"I think what they are most focused on is not the fact I have made a mistake and apologized and have tried to do right in my life since. What they are focused on is their pocketbook and their wallet," Sanford told The Associated Press.

But some have said the affair will be difficult for Sanford to shake. After all, he disappeared from the state for five days in 2009, telling his aides, who told the media, that he was hiking on the Appalachian Trail.

All along, he was in Argentina. When he returned, Sanford confessed to the affair in a tearful news conference and later called Maria Belen Chapur his "soul mate." They couple are engaged and plan to marry this summer.

"He probably will have to apologize at public functions and then talk about what he's learned about himself," said Jeri Cabot, a political scientist from The College of Charleston. "It's still going to be an issue because you're asking people for their vote."

Clemson University political scientist Dave Woodard said voters are generally forgiving. He noted that when Sanford, while still governor, apologized to a women's Republican club in Greenville, "they were very tearfully embracing him."

But running again for office may be different.

"The question is whether or not you trust him to be your representative after that," Woodard said.

Sanford represented the 1st District for three terms in the 1990s. The seat became vacant recently when Gov. Nikki Haley appointed U.S. Rep. Tim Scott to fill the unexpired Senate term of Jim DeMint, who resigned.

Sanford is known for his tight-fisted ways. When first running for governor in 2002, he once boasted of sleeping on a cot in his office to save money and later brought squealing and defecating pigs to the Statehouse to make a point about pork barrel spending in the state budget.

But his fiscal conservatism was also questioned when The Associated Press examined his travel expenses as governor, including an economic development trip to South America in which he had a romantic rendezvous with Chapur.

Donna McCaskill, a Republican voter from Mount Pleasant, said she didn't think Sanford's past problems will be an issue.

"If Bill Clinton and Marion Berry can come back from the dead, anybody can come back," McCaskill said, referring to the former president tarred by a sex scandal and the former Washington, D.C., mayor who remained active in city politics after serving time on federal drug charges.

"We've seen great instances of Democrats coming back, I don't see why Republicans can't come back, too," she said.

Before leaving office, Sanford avoided impeachment but was censured by the Legislature over state travel expenses he used for the affair. He also paid what is still the largest ethics fine ever in South Carolina at $70,000.

His tearful confession, though, cost him his marriage to his then-wife, Jenny, who was also his closest political confidant and campaign manager.

She later wrote a tell-all book about their relationship, and flirted with the idea of running for the 1st District seat. But the mother of four boys with Mark Sanford scrapped those plans this week, saying being at home with family was more important than running for Congress.

Gov. Sanford spent his last 18 months in office traveling around the state, asking for forgiveness.

"The apology tour, if you want to call it that, is over. All you can do is say I'm sorry. But at some point, you have to lift up your head and start moving and I'm at that point," he said.

Sanford has the instant name recognition and could, if he gets permission from donors, tap into $1.1 million he has remaining in his gubernatorial campaign fund.

The district reaches from the sea islands with million-dollar oceanfront homes northeast of Charleston to southwest along the coast to the gated communities of Hilton Head Island, with its many Yankee transplants. When Sanford ran in the 1990s, the district reached into more conservative Horry County, but that area has been split and is now part of another district.

Teddy Turner, the son of media magnate Ted Turner, has said he will seek the GOP nomination in the district. Several state lawmakers have also announced plans to run, although the official filing for the race doesn't open until Friday. The primary is March 19.

South Carolina voters haven't had much of an appetite for political comebacks for officials who make headlines for a faux pas or controversy. Former Lt. Gov. Andre Bauer couldn't overcome his personal troubles with speeding, a plane crash and other controversies to win the governor's office or a congressional seat, and former Gov. David Beasley's couldn't shake his support for removing the Confederate flag from the Statehouse dome when he ran for office again.

Gov. Nikki Haley, another tea party favorite, said she wasn't surprised Sanford was getting back into politics.

"He is someone who is very involved in policy and has always loved politics. This is going back home for him, his old congressional seat," she said.

The Pikes Peak Workforce Center is calling for employers to participate in youth summer employment fair.

The center?s Youth Zone is hosting a job fair at The DoubleTree Hotel Thursday, March 7 and urges any El Paso or Teller County employers who pay at least the minimum wage of $7.78 per hour to participate.

There is no charge for employers and there will be lunch, according to a release from the center.

Fewer than three in 10 American teenagers now hold jobs such as running cash registers, mowing lawns or busing restaurant tables from June to August, according to the release. The decline has been particularly sharp since 2000, with employment for 16-to-19-year olds falling to the lowest level since World War II.

And teen employment may never return to pre-recession levels, suggests a projection by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Experts agree that lack of employment opportunities for teens and young adults often leads to a lack of knowledge and experience needed to build long-term careers. Those who don?t work in their teen years may not learn the soft skills needed to be successful employees in the future.

?Employers can help,? Lance Bolton, President of the Pikes Peak Community College System said in a statement. ?Students need, and benefit enormously from, work opportunities. Part-time employment or internships can be life-changing for students who know little about professional work environments. Skills related to character, self-control and work ethic naturally emerge from work opportunities in business.?

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) ? John Elway has been down this lonely road before.

The quarterback-turned-front office executive has now been a part of two playoff runs that ended not in the confetti-filled celebration expected of the AFC's No. 1 seed but with a painful introspection about what all went wrong in a stunningly early exit from the postseason party.

Elway experienced it as a player in 1996, when the Denver Broncos were upset at home by the Jacksonville Jaguars, 30-27, then bounced back to win the next two Super Bowls.

"I know it didn't take long," to get over that loss, Elway said Monday, "because I knew we felt like we had a good football team coming back ? as we do now."

Elway once again finds himself picking up the pieces, along with coach John Fox, after one of the most disheartening losses in the franchise's history, their 38-35 defeat in double-overtime to the Baltimore Ravens on Saturday night.

Elway pledged to dissect the defeat to extract every possible lesson, after which he'll have to decide where to upgrade a roster that jelled so well during a 13-3 regular season but whose 11-game winning streak and home-field advantage were wasted when a heavy underdog outplayed and outcoached them.

Elway said the key was to not get defensive and "hopefully we're back in this situation again and we'll have looked at it the right way and learned from the situation."

The playoff pratfall won't necessarily weigh heavier than the regular season in Elway's evaluations, but he did say playoff pressure reveals a lot: "As I've said, you make your money during the regular season. You make your legacy in the postseason."

First things first.

Elway said he'll sign off next month on the next two years and $40 million in Peyton Manning's contract after he passes his physical. Manning showed no ill effects of the nerve problem in his neck that led to four operations and his departure from Indianapolis, putting up the second-best numbers of his 14 healthy seasons in the NFL.

Another high priority is locking up his blind-side protector, All-Pro left tackle Ryan Clady, who rejected a five-year proposal that included $28 million in guarantees last summer. If they can't reach an agreement this time, Denver will put the franchise tag on the three-time Pro Bowler, roughly tripling his salary to about $10 million next season.

Elway also must decide whether free agents Brandon Stokley, Justin Bannan, Kevin Vickerson, Keith Brooking, Jimmy Leonhard and Dan Koppen will have roles in this rebound after serving as key contributors this season.

Then, there's the matter of getting over this last loss itself, one in which Manning had three costly turnovers, fellow All-Pro Champ Bailey got burned for two long touchdown passes and Fox made a series of debatable decisions that he was grilled about Monday in his season-ending news conference.

"As a coach and, I know John as a competitor, you relive it, you redo it, you second-guess, you I don't know how to explain it, but it stings," Fox said. "They call them scars. You remember it because it doesn't go away, like most scars. And you learn from it. You say, 'I made a mistake ... I'm going to fix it and then not let it happen again.'"

That's precisely what second-year safety Rahim Moore said after he misjudged Joe Flacco's 70-yard prayer to Jacoby Jones with no timeouts and 31 seconds left to tie the game at 35.

After the game, a choked-up Moore put the loss squarely on his shoulders and vowed to atone for his big blunder.

"That's definitely going to motivate me," Moore said. "I'm going to keep my head high and next time the opportunity comes, I'm just going to make it for my team. I'll just make the play. I'm just sorry the way the season ended because it ended all on me, which I never would expect. I apologize to all the fans and people who love the Broncos because this wasn't what they deserved. And I'll get it right."

Fox said he stood by his decision to play for overtime after Jacoby's touchdown staggered the Broncos ? and Elway concurred. Given the ball at his 20 with 31 seconds, two timeouts and one of the best quarterbacks in the game, the Broncos coach decided to run out the clock and head to overtime, so Manning took a knee.

"I thought it was the right thing at that time," said Elway, sounding nothing like the go-for-broke quarterback he once was. "I think with where the team was mentally and the situation we were in, I thought that it was a good move."

Even 48 hours after the game, that single decision remained the most hotly debated of the many Fox, Manning and the Broncos made in their gaffe-filled loss to the Ravens. The second-guessing only got more intense Sunday after Atlanta moved the ball 41 yards in 12 seconds to set up the game-winning field goal in its 30-28 victory over Seattle.

But, Fox said, Denver's situation was nowhere near what the Falcons faced. The Falcons were losing and had no other choice. They were playing in a dome. The Broncos had just given up a game-tying 70-yard heave and were standing on the sideline in disbelief. The temperature was below 10 degrees. Manning had thrown just two long passes all night.

Fox said the Broncos were like a prizefighter who was staggered just seconds from the bell, so the smart thing to do wasn't to go for a haymaker themselves but regroup for the next round.

Fox also stood by his other important strategic decision. A few minutes before kneeling on the ball, Denver was up by seven and trying to grind out the clock. Despite being down to their third-string running back, 188-pound Ronnie Hillman, the Broncos called three straight running plays, including a run off right guard on third-and-7 that went for no gain. That ran the clock down to 1:15 and made Baltimore burn all its timeouts.

But three plays after a punt, Flacco threw that improbable 70-yard touchdown pass over Moore.

Fox said he played the percentages on all the calls, noting there was a 99.9 percent chance of winning when the Ravens had the ball on the 30 with 41 seconds left.

In the end, all the analytics didn't matter. They simply didn't make the plays they had to keep a terrific season going.

"This is something that the players will remember for a long time," Elway said. "They'll never forget what happened on Saturday. They'll never forget that and I think that we'll use that as we did in '96. It was a great incentive for us to come back and have an even better year the following year like we did in '97. Like I said, it's how we approach it, how we use it, how we learn from it. And it gives us an opportunity to be that much better next year."

Notes: Fox dismissed any notion of Bailey moving from cornerback to safety next season. ... Elway said the Broncos view rookie Omar Bolden as a potential starting CB.

Pill-sized device provides rapid, detailed imaging of esophageal lining

Physicians may soon have a new way to screen patients for Barrett's esophagus, a precancerous condition usually caused by chronic exposure to stomach acid. Researchers at the Wellman Center for Photomedicine at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) have developed an imaging system enclosed in a capsule about the size of a multivitamin pill that creates detailed, microscopic images of the esophageal wall. The system has several advantages over traditional endoscopy.

"This system gives us a convenient way to screen for Barrett's that doesn't require patient sedation, a specialized setting and equipment, or a physician who has been trained in endoscopy," says Gary Tearney, MD, PhD, of the Wellman Center and the MGH Pathology Department, corresponding author of the report receiving online publication in Nature Medicine. "By showing the three-dimensional, microscopic structure of the esophageal lining, it reveals much more detail than can be seen with even high-resolution endoscopy."

The system developed by Tearney and his colleagues involves a capsule containing optical frequency domain imaging (OFDI) technology ? a rapidly rotating laser tip emitting a beam of near-infrared light and sensors that record light reflected back from the esophageal lining. The capsule is attached to a string-like tether that connects to the imaging console and allows a physician or other health professional to control the system. After the capsule is swallowed by a patient, it is carried down the esophagus by normal contraction of the surrounding muscles. When the capsule reaches the entrance to the stomach, it can be pulled back up by the tether. OFDI images are taken throughout the capsule's transit down and up the esophagus.

The researchers tested the system in 13 unsedated participants ? six known to have Barrett's esophagus and seven healthy volunteers. The physicians operating the system were able to image the entire esophagus in less than a minute, and a procedure involving four passes ? two down the esophagus and two up ? could be completed in around six minutes. A typical endoscopic examination requires that the patient stay in the endoscopy unit for approximately 90 minutes. The detailed microscopic images produced by the OFDI system revealed subsurface structures not easily seen with endoscopy and clearly distinguished the cellular changes that signify Barrett's esophagus. Study participants who had previously undergone endoscopy indicated they preferred the new procedure.

"The images produced have been some of the best we have seen of the esophagus," says Tearney, a professor of Pathology at Harvard Medical School and an MGH Research Scholar. "We originally were concerned that we might miss a lot of data because of the small size of the capsule; but we were surprised to find that, once the pill has been swallowed, it is firmly 'grasped' by the esophagus, allowing complete microscopic imaging of the entire wall. Other methods we have tried can compress the esophageal lining, making it difficult to obtain accurate, three-dimensional pictures. The capsule device provides additional key diagnostic information by making it possible to see the surface structure in greater detail"

Current recommendations for diagnosis of Barrett's esophagus, which is uncommon in women, call for endoscopic screening of men with chronic, frequent heartburn and other symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux disease. Study co-author Norman Nishioka, MD, Wellman Center and MGH Gastroenterology, notes, "An inexpensive, low-risk device could be used to screen larger groups of patients, with the hope that close surveillance of patients found to have Barrett's could allow us to prevent esophageal cancer or to discover it at an earlier, potentially curable stage. But we need more studies to see if that hope would be fulfilled."

Louisville coach Rick Pitino, it turns out, has been secretly motivating his team by offering a parallel that is all but unmentionable on campus. Apparently he has told his players he wishes they played more like the University of Kentucky.
Now, Pitino was not referring to John Calipari?s Kentucky. He was talking about his Kentucky, more specifically the 1995-96 team that went 34-2, won a national title and included seven NBA first-round picks.

He has explained to these Cardinals that if they want to be great, they will need to become as relentless as those Wildcats. Big leads will need to turn into bigger leads. Attacks will have to remain constant.

Confusion Reigns Supreme with Online Movie and TV Streaming ...

Recent shifts in technology due to the Internet have destroyed the profitability of several industries including the newspaper and music businesses. The next business that will be made over by technology is television. The profitability of owning TV networks is being undermined by digital video recorders, internet-enabled on-demand viewing, Netflix, Hulu, YouTube, and piracy/theft.? In this post, I?m going to list many if not all of these choices currently available to you and me ? and there are WAY TOO MANY. And a lot of amateur content is taking up an increasing portion of a viewers? time online and on mobile/tablet devices. You Tube has how many new original channels?? I mean unless you?ve got absolutely nothing to do 24hrs a day other than veg in front of a computer and or TV, you can?t ingest even 10% of this content.

Consumption of network and cable content is taking place in ways that allow viewers to circumvent high monthly cable bills, avoid watching commercials, or both. The new Barry Diller backed ?Aereo? ? https://www.aereo.com/ will indeed disrupt cable and pay-tv as never before. Every single one of these changes represents a move to a revenue model that is less profitable than the one currently enjoyed by the TV networks. It is simply a matter of time before the revenue and profitability of the major networks begins to fall seriously erode.

Consumers are awash with the plethora choices of streaming movie services, VOD and TV/time shifting programming (between 30 to 40 and counting). There are so many choices that I defy anyone to tell me exactly what they are buying and what each of them offer, specifically how tey are different. Anand Subramanian of startup NimbleTV was even more blunt. ?There?s content everywhere. It?s a mess. It?s a total mess for consumers.?

Hollywood releases maybe 10-12 ?big? picture events every year and all of the releases are timed by Holidays (Thanksgiving/Christmas, July 4^th, Memorial Day, Halloween, and Labor Day weekends). Independent movies are released around these times and are scattered throughout the year.? Years back when DVD?s were released, those releases in the stores reinforced the theatrical releases with a barrage of marketing. You saw the same big pictures being marketed again in 6-9 months after the theaters. So, when you went to Blockbuster you had a ?a-ha? moment. You?d say, oh yeah, I remember that movie, I missed it at the theaters and you would rent it. It was pretty clear what you saw, ?what you missed and what you wanted to see again. Then, HBO and Showtime would re-market the same movies in their PAY-TV window approximately 10-12 months after the theaters. ?They?d remain there for 24-36 months sometimes even longer.

When Pay-TV was in its heyday, there was a ?pay? content war between HBO and Showtime. Some studios had exclusives with HBO, some with Showtime. To the average consumer, this didn?t mean all too much.? No one wanted to watch a Paramount movie, they wanted to see ?Fatal Attraction?.? Maybe with the exception of which pay-tv service had Disney movies (if you had kids). ?Now, that doesn?t really matter too much as kids watch gobs of shows on basic, Nick Jr., etc. ?Over the years, HBO got wise and supplemented its schedule with well produced original programming and still is. Showtime followed with its original programming and both duked it out with Sports, specifically Boxing.

Time shift forward, now it?s a war between Netflix and HBO.

Its not HBO and Showtime, but Netflix ? http://goo.gl/0N2No . And its not only Netflix, it Amazon Prime, Hulu plus, iTunes and a myriad of other streaming offerings.? I?ve compiled a list below. But the bottom line is how does anyone really understand what they are buying? If you subscribe to Netflix, can I see Disney movies? Will I get mega-hit from Universal like Jurassic Park, Les Miserables, and Despicable Me Part 2? Or do I need to subscribe to several streaming services? And, which ones?

And down the road very soon Barry Diller?s back Aereo TV will expand to 22 cities ? https://www.aereo.com/. Why is this disruptive if it only offers ABC, CBS and NBC as the primary driver of the service? (more on this later).

Here is the list ( I hope I?ve got most included). I?ll admit I am confused as everyone else and I?m not going to buy or subscribe to more than one service especially when I don?t even know that if I do, I?ve essentially duplicated the movies and content I?ve subscribed to.

Now about Aereo.? One of the things we all get cable for whether you realize it or not is to receive the 3 main Broadcast Networks, ABC, CBS and NBC. These are on basic cable in 100% of all cable systems nationwide. And basic cable costs at least $ 50-70 a month and 9 times out of 10 its bundled with pay-TV and a phone land line along with internet access bringing your bill to over $ 100 a month.? And generally, one has a Netflix or Amazon Prime subscription (or another streaming movie service). ?There are 2 kinds of camps here or cable subscribers, one with kids and the others without kids. For the people without kids, Aereo + 1 streaming movie service (unless you are a sports nut and MUST have ESPN) would be sufficient. You?d have local broadcast TV and all the movies you could watch/stream. What else do you really need (unless you must watch ?Honey Boo-Boo? and then I can?t help you). For the families with kids, this is slightly age dependent. Its hard when you have toddlers NOT to want to get several of Viacom?s Kids channels or Disney?s kids channels (Nick, Nick Jr., Disney Channel, Disney Jr., etc. )? If you have older kids, teens etc. a movie streaming service with Hulu + might suffice.? For those without kids, Aereo + a movie streaming service will drastically cut your bill. Aereo I believe will charge about $ 9.00 a month, no subscription or early termination fee (take that Cox, Comcast, Time-Warner and Fios). Maybe with Amazon Prime or Netflix and your looking at under $ 20.00 a month. Yes, you will need internet access so add another $40-60.00 a month depending on your need for speed. But its definitely less than the typical bundled services. If you don?t think that Aereo has Pay-TV in its crosshairs, you?re crazy. We shall see how this unfolds as it winds its way through the courts. Yes, Aereo is being sued by the broadcasters and others, but it?s also rolling out its service nationwide this spring. I am signing up to see what its like ? but it seems like an idea whose time has arrived

Some of 14 hostages in Los Angeles were assaulted

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Robbers stabbed a clothing store employee and sexually assaulted another during an hours-long hostage drama that ended early Friday with a police SWAT team surging into the shop and rescuing 14 workers.

No robbers were found. Police were seeking at least two men and also were trying to determine whether a car found abandoned in neighboring Culver City was the getaway vehicle.

The ordeal at the Nordstrom Rack store near Los Angeles International Airport began at about 11 p.m. when a man called 911 and reported that his girlfriend had called and said there were gunmen in the store, Lt. Andy Neiman said.

Police officers and special weapons team members swarmed the Promenade at Howard Hughes Center, an outdoor shopping center that also contains restaurants and a theater.

The officers saw a man leave the second-floor store but he ran back inside when they tried to contact him, Neiman said.

Moments later, another man came out with a woman, but when he saw the police he grabbed her and pushed her back inside, Neiman said.

SWAT members surrounded the location but weren't able to talk to anyone inside during the four-hour standoff.

When they finally burst into the store, they found hostages locked in a storage room and others in a bathroom, Neiman said.

The 13 women and one man were all believed to be employees because the store was closed when the robbery began, Neiman said.

One hostage was treated at the scene for a non-life threatening stab wound, Neiman said.

Another employee had been sexually assaulted, Neiman said, although he declined to provide details.

Other workers complained of minor injuries, "probably because they'd been manhandled or pushed away by the assailants," the lieutenant said.

Officers searched the store to make sure nobody was hiding but didn't find the robbers, Neiman said.

Aurora families brace for raw emotions of trial

Sitting in a preliminary hearing this week, Amee Gharbi was not prepared for the sound of 33 rapid-fire gunshots on a snippet of 911 tape from the Aurora movie-theater massacre.

She glanced over at her 16-year-old son Yousef, who got a bullet to the brain during the July 20 bloodbath, and "his eyes were as wide as mine."

Gharbi knows she will likely hear more of the same -- and worse -- after a judge found probable cause for first-degree murder charges against suspect James Holmes late Thursday, putting the case on track for trial.

But she?said she'll endure it in the hope that light will be shed on the big unanswered?question looming over the tragedy: Why would someone shoot up a theater full of?innocent Batman fans?

"Holmes?maybe will say something," she said hopefully.

At the?very least, she said, the public may get a look inside a notebook he mailed to?a University of Colorado psychiatrist in which he reportedly detailed his?plans. "Everybody wants to know what's in it," she said.

The notebook can only be introduced as evidence if Holmes, 25, pleads not guilty by reason of insanity, removing the doctor-client privilege that is keeping it under wraps for now.

The plea will come at Holmes' arraignment, which won't happen until March 12, the judge ruled Friday.?If Holmes does enter an insanity plea, a trial date would not be set until his mental health exam is done, legal expert Scott Robinson said.?

At any point, prosecutors and the defense could strike a deal, thereby avoiding a trial, but many of the Aurora families say they want Holmes judged by a jury, even if it compounds the anguish they felt at this week's hearing.

Some are hungry for more information about Holmes' thinking and planning. Some seek emotional closure. Others know it?s the only road to capital punishment.

"Through an entire first day of the hearing, not one person in that room had a dry eye -- except for that son of a b***," Sam Soudani said of Holmes.?"As far as I'm concerned, if he wants to be a robot, he should be deactivated."

'I just want to look him in the eye'
Soudani's 23-year-old daughter, Farrah, survived the shooting but suffered major organ damage. They both attended the preliminary hearing, but Soudani said Farrah?would probably skip any trial.

"I don't think my daughter could look at him," he said.

Two fathers of Aurora theater victims describe watching the accused gunman, James Holmes, in court. KUSA's Todd Walker reports.

For Gharbi, face-time with Holmes is one reason she wants a trial instead of a plea deal.

"I just want to look him in the eye," she said of the doctoral-program dropout, who stared impassively into the distance during this week's court proceedings.

A trial isn't a necessity for Scott Larimer, who lost his 27-year-old son John and just wants to make sure that Holmes "never walks the streets again."

Yet if there is one, he hopes it will reveal whether anyone -- particularly the University of Colorado -- knew what Holmes was capable of and failed to act.

Larimer, who lives in Illinois, did not attend the preliminary hearing and said he wouldn't be able to handle the trial testimony.

"When they start talking about finding my son lying on the floor, I'm not sure I'm up to sitting in court. And if there are pictures," he said, trailing off.

Theresa Hoover, whose 18-year-old son, A.J. Boik, was among the 12 killed, went to the hearing, steeling herself for a raw reaction.

"I knew my child's name would come up, but to actually hear it was a little surreal," she said.

"During the 911 calls, A.J.'s fiancee [who survived] was with me, and it made her relive a little bit of what happened and that broke my heart. For me, I was like, 'OK, that's the moment when my son died.'"

Still, Hoover is not sorry she went. She said that since July she has been "in a daze," not quite willing or able to grasp that her artistic, spirited young son is really gone.

"Attending that hearing kind of helped me ... move past that," she said, adding that a trial would help her face the reality of her loss. "To hear all of this is almost healing."

Some want a trial because they want the case to end with a lethal injection, not a prison cell. Prosecutors have 63 days from arraignment to announce whether they will seek the death penalty.

Hoover said that while she doesn't think Holmes deserves to "walk this earth," she would rather see him locked up without parole, forced to "live with what he's done."

"Put him in general population, though," she said. "With the other mean guys."
