Death toll in Canada rail crash up to 28

The death toll from the Lac-Megantic train disaster has risen to 28 after four more bodies were pulled from rubble of the devastated Canadian town.

A further 22 people remain missing and presumed dead after the rail disaster, Quebec police said on Friday, as accident investigators continue to comb through the destruction.

A spokesman from the coroner's office added they have now identified eight of the 28 bodies, up from just one earlier.

Part of a train made up of 72 tank cars loaded with crude oil derailed in the early hours of Saturday, July 6, in Lac-Megantic, near the Quebec-Maine border, igniting a huge explosion that laid waste to the centre of the lakeside town.

Police working in the disaster zone have had "a great deal of difficulty" because of strong petrol fumes, Quebec provincial police spokesman Michel Forget said.

"These are the places where there is a much denser concentration of oil. So, when we lift pieces, these fumes" reach insupportable limits for the investigators, he said.

"We have had therefore to review our strategy and deploy to other spots," Forget explained, emphasising that "the ground is contaminated with oil in some places."

Police are examining "different measures to ensure ventilation to make sure the work can continue" as efficiently as possible.

The approximately 200 police on the scene, including 60 investigators, will be reinforced in the coming days by crime scene technicians from Montreal and Quebec City "in order to accelerate the work," he added.

Earlier, investigation official Jean Laporte said the Lac-Megantic crash was "extremely likely the most devastating rail accident in the history of Canada."

The US transportation safety agency would also work with the investigators, Laporte added.

Pro-life advocate: Prisoner sterilization in California follows familiar pattern

A pro-life advocate believes the illegal sterilization of inmates in California targeted minority groups believed to be prone to crime.

"I'm telling you, I bet my house that if someone goes out here and studies that, what you are going to find is that they are going to be the primary target groups ? blacks and Hispanics,? says Mike Crutcher, president of Life Dynamics.

The Center for Investigative Reporting found that doctors in California illegally sterilized almost 150 female inmates from 2006 to 2010. The center found that almost 100 more were sterilized prior to 2006 without proper procedures.

Crutcher, Mark (Life Dynamics)Crutcher says the sterilization ?tracks perfectly? with pro-life research that found abortion clinics target minority communites.

?There is no doubt about it,? he tells OneNewsNow.

The report says female inmates in prisons across the state were pressured to go through the procedure while they were pregnant.

"The original motive behind the legalization of abortion was to eliminate what they called dysgenic groups, primarily blacks and Hispanics, and a big part of that was sterilization,? Crutcher explains.

Doctors allegedly pressured and targeted inmates who had many children or were likely to be repeat offenders.

California banned forced sterilization in state prisons in 1979.?

TV reporter goes all out with bear safety tips

TV

TV reporters provide valuable information on a daily basis in an effort to help viewers navigate through a world of local news, weather, sports ... and bears.

After a rash of bear sightings in the Providence, R.I., area, NBC 10 reporter Julie Tremmel "put together a few tips from the experts to help protect yourself should you come across a curious bear." She then offers a fantastic re-enactment-style report featuring herself acting as someone trying to ward off an approaching animal.

  • "Avoid direct eye contact with the bear," Tremmel says, via voiceover, as video shows her in a grassy area at night, her eyes moving wildly from side to side.
  • "Don't run away. Instead, back off slowly," she reports, backing into the brush, lit by what feels like car headlights.
  • "Wave your arms to let the animal know you're human." This instruction comes with Tremmel flailing her arms, like she would do if she'd just tipped over the bear's honey pot and attracted thousands of bees.
  • "Don't yell, stay quiet" is coupled with an index-finger-to-the-mouth shhhhhh gesture. "Unless the bear attacks, then scream and throw things at the bear." Tremmel whips off a flip-flop and tosses it at her camera operator.
  • And finally, "If the bear attacks, curl up in a ball on your side or lay flat on your stomach," Tremmel advises as she gets down in the tall grass and no doubt gets eaten alive by mosquitoes. "Above all, stay calm."

The viral video sensation left TODAY anchors Willie Geist and Natalie Morales in stitches Friday morning. "How great was that?" Geist asked Morales, whose eyes were filled with tears of laughter.

But the pair admitted that Tremmel's report was valuable information for viewers concerned with possible bear attacks.

"Curl up in a ball and wait for death, I think, was the final piece of advice," Geist concluded.

Missing California toddler's father freed, search continues

By Ronnie Cohen

OAKLAND, California (Reuters) - A father arrested on suspicion of endangering his toddler daughter whom he reported kidnapped from his parked car in California was released from jail on Friday after prosecutors declined to file charges, as police continued to search for the girl.

Police arrested John Webb, 49, of Oakland, after he told them his 21-month-old daughter Daphne Viola Webb was kidnapped on Wednesday from his sport utility vehicle when he left her with his 87-year-old mother to dash into an East Oakland store for an energy drink. His mother suffers from dementia.

Webb spent two days in jail and was scheduled to be formally charged on Friday. Authorities transported him to an Oakland courtroom, but the Alameda County district attorney's office declined to press charges, said spokesman Eamon O'Connor. He said he could not elaborate.

A jail representative said Webb was released on Friday evening.

Oakland police have said that Webb was not a suspect in his daughter's disappearance.

Police spokeswoman Johnna Watson said at least one witness saw a woman carrying a girl matching Daphne's description near the store.

The toddler was last seen wearing pink socks and an orange pajama set with pink hearts.

Dozens of officers, FBI agents and cadaver dogs have searched for the child at Webb's East Oakland home, a nearby park and a waterway he and Daphne frequented.

Webb's mother and young adult daughter waited to see him in court on Friday, but a bailiff told them Webb would be released. Webb's mother looked confused as she leaned on a cane and on her granddaughter, who appeared on the verge of tears.

Both Webb and Daphne's mother are cooperating with investigators, Watson said. She said the girl's mother was in an undisclosed location.

Police asked that anyone who had seen the father and daughter together in the days or hours before the incident contact investigators. On Thursday and Friday, officers handed out hundreds of fliers with Daphne's picture in the neighborhood where her father reported her missing, Watson said.

Bill O?Reilly Thinks the Coney Island Mermaid Parade Seems Pretty Gay

Fox News anthropologist Bill O'Reilly had one of his minions check out the Mermaid Parade in Coney Island this year, the event's 30th. The result, which aired on last night's O'Reilly Factor, was ... extremely condescending and vaguely bigoted! "I'm not being a wise guy or being offensive. It seems like there are a lot of gays attracted to this," the host said to his correspondent Jesse Watters, who filmed the segment with his collar popped. "Why is that?" Watters learned from his reporting that "a lot of the transvestite community descends on Coney Island during this parade. I have no idea why." It's all very illuminating.

"Just a week ago there was a gay pride parade," said O'Reilly. "How many parades do you want?" Watters is again prepared to answer: "Well, they like parades! They're into pageantry, they like to show off their wares," he said.

"Exhibitionism," said O'Reilly.

There are also boob jokes, for all the straight fellas out there, and clips from American Pie, because these guys are 17 years old in the brain.

Good Reads: From algorithms, to Roman walls, to the new liberals and conservatives

This week's round-up of Good Reads include doubts about algorithms' 'all-power,' the recipe for Roman concrete, the need for a Turkish Mandela, young liberals who may be more conservative than they realize, and the usefulness of military 'land power.'

Algorithms all-powerful?

In spite of appearances ? from the US National Security Agency searching American phone records for patterns to Google counting keywords in e-mails to decide which ads to display ? the algorithm may not conquer all.

This is the conclusion that science reporter Tom Whipple comes around to in his article ?Slaves to the Algorithm? in the magazine Intelligent Life, a sister publication of The Economist. An algorithm is how so-called big data is crunched into something meaningful. ?If p, then q? is an algorithm, but in the age of fast computers, the ?p? can include billions of data points.

Mr. Whipple explores the work of a company, Epagogix, that forecasts the earning power of proposed movies for Hollywood studios, based on thousands of factors punched into its software. It seems to work. And has uncovered some fun facts. One is that so-called bankable movie stars are almost nonexistent. Only three actors, Epagogix has found, actually bring a positive return on investment ? Will Smith, Brad Pitt, and Johnny Depp.

But human judgment has hardly left the picture. The head of Epagogix notes that his program assumes that everything about the movie is done well ? that the dialogue is credible and the actors good (stars or not). And even so, his algorithms can?t discern if the movie is good, only if, done well, a lot of people are likely to pay to see it.

Whipple discusses another facet of algorithms. They are good at finding patterns, sometimes surprising ones, in big numbers. They are not so good at predicting the behavior of individuals. Dating sites, for example, have yet to show any scientific evidence that they can predict who will hit it off with whom.

Lost recipe for Roman concrete, cracked

Some technology just isn?t what it used to be. The Portland cement that we use to make concrete these days doesn?t have a fraction of the lasting power of the aggregate the Romans used a couple millenniums ago. According to a report by Bernhard Warner in Bloomberg Businessweek, research engineers studying 12 ancient Roman-built harbors found that the breakwaters made of Roman concrete have stood the pounding waves for 2,000 years and are still intact. Modern concrete has a working life under water of a mere 50 years. The older, stronger stuff had an added advantage: Its manufacture was relatively clean. Creating Portland cement releases a tremendous amount of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere.?

Needed: a Turkish Mandela

One of the central dangers in Turkey today is of a slide into two sharply polarized camps ? the government and its conservative, religious, largely rural backers on one side and the more affluent, secular, and modernizing protesters on the other. They have come to be called ?black Turks? and ?white Turks.?

Daron Acemoglu, a Turkish-born economist at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, has been writing about the current troubles in his country of origin on his Why Nations Fail blog. He notes that Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan recently grouped Turks into ?black? and ?white,? putting himself among the ?black Turks.?

How do societies break out of cycles of polarization? Mr. Acemoglu consults history and finds several routes, but the most attractive is when a leader musters the vision and courage to make peace across the fault lines and show goodwill to the other side.

?So bottom line: we badly need a Turkish Mandela,? he says.

What they really mean by ?conservative??

Meanwhile, Americans may not be quite as polarized as they think they are. A series of three new studies find that young adults who call themselves liberal Democrats are overall not quite as liberal on the issues as they think they are. But young people from the rest of the political spectrum tend to bill themselves as more conservative than they are on the issues. The biggest disparity is among those who regard themselves as most conservative. Not so much, it turns out. When asked their stands on a dozen major issues from welfare to gay rights, they didn?t toe as conservative a line as they thought they did, according to the studies, which were reported first in an academic journal, and brought to us by Tom Jacobs in Pacific Standard magazine. Clearly, conservatism is the more popular brand, even when it?s not an obvious fit.

The benefits of military ?land power??

With US forces finally checking out of Afghanistan and American attention pivoting to East Asia, it?s time for some soul-searching: What?s the Army for?

Maj. Robert M. Chamberlain, writing in the Armed Forces Journal, sees future peace and prosperity in currently unfashionable land power. Terrorists who hole up in the world?s backwaters can best be pursued by special forces teams and armed drones. The Navy can protect the world?s sea lanes and global commerce. Air power can strike awesomely anywhere. But land power ? the job of the Army and Marines ? is inherently less threatening, he argues. ?Land power is the only avenue by which America can enhance regional security and stability, deter Chinese militarism and encourage Chinese commitment to the global status quo.?
