Govt aviation contracts when sent to Mexico, Brazil, China and other countries diminish my forty years of surviving the ups and downs of my aviation career. You are taking away food and purchase power from a skilled work force. You are circulating our aviation dollars to other countries. You are driving a stake into the hearts and souls of those who are proud Americans. Those who have sacrificed time away from family, strive to reach professional excellence and came out on the other end of life feeling a sense of pride and accomplishment. Your verbal and business aviation policy attacks have negated the successes business aviation has worked hard to achieve.
Aircraft manufacturers use vendors to build aircraft for final assembly. This means jobs and families survive and prosper at these vendor locations.
With your admonishment of business aviation, taxation policies, demagoguery of flying business jets, your non support of attending Las Vegas conventions and along with business aviation expenditures you dislike is not supporting our economy. Now you ask my industry to pay for government budget miss management, government over spending, government FAA regulatory intrusion and a special $100 flight tax is unacceptable to everyday workers both skilled and unskilled.

Report says Apple to unveil new iPad in March
NEW YORK (AP) ? A news report says Apple plans to unveil a new iPad early next month.
AllThingsD, a website affiliated with The Wall Street Journal, says Apple Inc. is holding an event in San Francisco the first week of March ? the same week Apple announced the iPad 2 last year.
The report cites unnamed people familiar with the device. Apple declined comment Thursday.
It's not known whether the new device will be called the iPad 3, and when it will be available for sale. Last year, sales of the iPad 2 began in the U.S. nine days after the announcement.

Navy likely new black at New York Fashion Week (Reuters)
NEW YORK (Reuters) ? Navy is likely to replace black on the catwalk when New York Fashion Week starts on Thursday, with experts expecting rich fabrics, waist-defining jackets and some 1920s-inspired styles sparked by movies like The Artist.
Dresses will continue to feature strongly among the 90 or so designers showing fall 2012 collections, experts say, because of the wide appeal to consumers who are more thoughtful and focused on value as the United States emerges from recession.
A dress is seen as more tempting because it allows women to skip the extra, and sometimes more costly, step of having to coordinate skirts or pants with a blouse or T-shirt.
"Dresses perform very well. Women love a dress," said Ken Downing, fashion director of luxury chain Neiman Marcus. "It's such an easy way to look amazing. It's effortlessly chic ... it goes from coffee to cocktails."
"Navy will be the neutral of the season," he said.
Downing said some designers will have drawn inspiration for a "modernized flapper" style from the silent film "The Artist" and Woody Allen's "Midnight in Paris" - both nominated for several Academy Awards - and the pending release of director Baz Luhrmann's remake of "The Great Gatsby."
But he cautions this does not mean an immediate return to the dropped waist dresses that defined the 1920s era.
"Many designers really understand the importance of celebrating a woman's shape and clothes that are reflective of her curves are always the most popular," he said. "Women spend a lot of time at the gym ... they want credit for how they look."
Deep shades of green and rich fabrics such as brocades and jacquards are likely runway trends that could draw in customers, said Colleen Sherin, senior fashion director at Saks Fifth Avenue.
"When customers spend their money, they want to feel and see that they are truly getting something for what they paid," she said. "Any form of embellishment or decorative fabrication makes the consumer feel they getting something quite special, that's worth the money they have spent."
SCULPTED JACKETS, HEMLINES FOR ALL
Designers were expected to show menswear-inspired tailored jackets sculpted to define a woman's waist and peplum dresses and other styles that show off the waist.
"I'm liking the masculine (inspiration), I like women that have a cool tailored jacket. Definitely I am heading in that direction, but we have a lot of great surprises," said designer Yigal Azrouel, whose collection will be shown on Friday.
But with consumers wary amid a slow U.S. recovery and a jittery global economy, designers are continuing a trend of growing their brands with cheaper collections.
Azrouel opened a first retail shop last week for his lower-end Cut25 label and Jason Wu -- best known for designing first lady Michelle Obama's inaugural ball gown -- released on Sunday a collection for Target with everything priced under $60.
"We're creating future Jason Wu customers," Wu said.
While unemployment dropped to a near three-year low of 8.3 percent and retailers posted a better-than-expected rise in sales for their traditionally slow month of January, retail sales in busy December rose at the weakest pace in seven months and consumer confidence unexpectedly fell in January.
"The consumer has become much more thoughtful in her purchases," said Sherin. "She's thinking about multiple usage, longevity of the garment, quality and that there's value."
When it comes to hemlines, there will be something to suit everyone, said Kibwe Chase Marshall, women's runway and trend editor for trend forecasting firm Stylesight.
"Maxi proportions, as well as the precarious 'midi' length have found footing as staples in ready-to-wear collections. On the horizon, A-line minis -- worn with hosiery -- complete the new length trio, creating myriad options," he said.
David Wolfe, creative director at trend forecasters The Doneger Group, said color would be the driving force at New York Fashion Week with rich jewel tones and bright accents and that the styles were becoming more accessible to women of all shapes.
"It's color that is moving fashion forward," he said.
He added that the sobering economic reality for consumers likely means fewer silly, unwearable trends in the fall collection. "I don't think we're going to have an identifiable look 'Oh God, it's the season of the Eskimo."

MOSCOW (AP) ? Prime Minister Vladimir Putin has "exhausted" his potential as Russia's leader, Mikhail Gorbachev declared Thursday, saying Putin's inability to change the Kremlin's political system might prompt more massive anti-government protests.
Putin ? who became prime minister after serving as Russia's president from 2000 to 2008 ? is almost certain to become president again during the March 4 election, despite opposition rallies that have been the largest protests Russia has seen since the 1991 Soviet collapse.
"If he does not overcome himself, change the way things are ? and I think it will be difficult for him to do that ? then everything will end up on city squares," Gorbachev, the last Soviet leader, said at a news conference.
Gorbachev said of Putin: "He won't carry that weight. By now he has exhausted himself."
Hours later, however, Putin came forward with suggestions of how to cut corruption ? a constant plague in Russia ? and even made amends with businessmen involved in the unpopular 1990s privatization of state enterprises.
Gorbachev recently urged Putin to give up power and annul the results of December's fraud-tainted parliamentary vote, which triggered the anti-Putin rallies. The thousands of protesters also have joined Kremlin critics in accusing Putin's government of cracking down on dissent, limiting press freedom and breeding widespread corruption in Russia.
Gorbachev led the Soviet Union from 1985 until its collapse in 1991. He remains admired abroad, but he is regarded as insignificant at home and his comments are not likely to threaten Putin's grip on power.
Putin, meanwhile, is striving to show that he still has a vision of reforms in Russia.
In an address to a business leaders' association, Putin said he would like businesses to work more closely with the government on drafting legislation and shaping policies.
But he also urged the business community to revisit the 1990s privatization wave in which many major factories and assets were sold at bargain prices to those who have become Russia's richest men.
"We need to close this problem of the 1990s, what was, frankly speaking, dishonest privatization," Putin said. "This should a one-off contribution or something like that. But we need to think about it together."
Putin is running against five other candidates, and one of them, New Jersey Nets tycoon Mikhail Prokhorov, is trailing second in polls in Moscow and St. Petersburg.
Prokhorov addressed the same business group a few hours before Putin and suggested that businessmen voluntarily donate 1 percent of their personal income and 0.2 percent of their companies' profits to a "social fund" to finance important but expensive projects like cancer and heart disease research or schools for talented children.
"Only this approach could help us regain trust of the society," he said.
Prokhorov left before Putin addressed the same audience, listing steps that could help Russian businesses, such as cutting the number of permits needed for opening and running businesses and rewriting Russian labor laws to make them more business-friendly.
Although Putin was enthusiastically received by the audience, the business executives still seem to take his promises with a pinch of salt.
"All of this is doable," Moscow-based consultant Andrei Muradov said, referring to Putin's list of ways to improve the business climate. "The important thing is that it's done with a long-term political will, and not just for the sake of election campaigning."

Axelrod defends administration birth control rule (AP)
WASHINGTON ? A political adviser to President Barack Obama said Tuesday the administration didn't intend to "abridge anyone's religious freedom" with its regulation requiring church-affiliated employers to cover birth control for their workers.
"This is an important issue. It's important for millions of women around the country," said Axelrod, the political adviser to Obama's re-election campaign. "We want to resolve it in an appropriate way and we're going to do that."
Roman Catholic leaders have assailed Obama and Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius for the new rule, arguing that it tramples on their religious beliefs. Religious groups that oppose the regulation say that it forces people of faith to choose between upholding church doctrine and serving the broader society.
In an interview Tuesday broadcast on MSNBC, Axelrod said, "I'm less concerned about the messaging of this than finding a resolution that makes sense." He noted that these institutions have roughly a year and a half to comply with the new regulation, saying "I think we need to lower our voices and get together."
At the same time, Axelrod acknowledged the dispute has caused a rift between the White House and the Roman Catholic Church.
"We have great respect for the work that these institutions do, and we certainly don't want to abridge anyone's religious freedom," he said. But Axelrod also said the administration was struggling to strike a balance between a stance that "guarantees women the preventive care they need" and one which respects the prerogatives of religious institutions.
"There are tens of thousands, hundreds of thousands of women who work in these universities who are not Catholic," he said. "The question is whether they're going ... to have the same access to basic preventive care."

White Galaxy Nexus is official, coming to the UK from Feb. 13
Following reports from some online retailers early last month, we now have official confirmation from Samsung that the white Galaxy Nexus is the real deal, and will be going on sale next week in the UK. Sammy promises that the white (GSM) Galaxy Nexus will be making its way to "a range of stores across the country" from next Monday, Feb. 13.
Like last year's white Nexus S, the white Galaxy Nexus switches up the color of the chassis, rather than the bezel surrounding the screen. That means you'll get a classy white finish on the back and sides of the device, while the front is furnished in the same black glass as the original. Internally, it's the same Galaxy Nexus we all know and love.

Garth Cane to Head up Z240 RV Tech Committee | RV Business

Garth Cane, technical editor for RV Lifestyle magazine and RV Lifestyle Dealer News, today (Feb. 6) was named chairman of the Canadian Standards Association Z240 RV Technical Committees.
According to a news release, the CSA Z240 RV Technical Committees are composed of members from manufacturers, suppliers, dealers, and general interest groups from both Canada and the United States. These members volunteer their time and expertise to update the specifications of the CSA Z240 code to adapt to evolving technical changes in the recreational vehicle industry.
The technical committees are responsible to keep the standards updated for propane, electrical, plumbing, general safety requirements of frames, lighting, gross vehicle weight ratings and road safety requirements for the construction of recreational vehicles that are built for sale in Canada.
Cane brings decades of experience and expertise to this new position. He has served as chairman of the CSA Z240 Electrical subcommittee from 2004 to the present, and also is on the Z241 technical committee for RV park models. He has worked in the RV industry as a sales and service consultant since 1971, and been the technical editor of RV Lifestyle Magazine and RV Lifestyle DEALER NEWS since 1991. He is also a very popular seminar speaker at RV shows and rallies throughout North America.
Cane is an electrical engineer and he was responsible for the first RV apprenticeship training program in the Province of Ontario. A member of the Automotive Journalist Association of Canada (AJAC), Garth was the host of the syndicated TV program RV Vacation Adventures, and has been a member of the board of the Recreational Vehicle Safety & Education Foundation (RVSEF) since 2006.

Garuda Indonesia, the country?s flag carrier, is seeking $200 million in bank loans for financing this year as it boosts the number of aircraft it plans to purchase by more than double.
Elisa Lumbantoruan, finance director at the airline, said the funds would be used as ?pre-delivery payment? for its plan to buy new aircraft in the coming years.
Garuda needs as much as $430 million to finance the purchase of the aircraft to expand its fleet, Elisa said. He neither disclosed the terms of the bank loans nor identified the lenders.
Pre-delivery payment is equivalent to a down payment to the aircraft manufacturer. Garuda is expected to use a combination of bank loans and its own cash to fund those payments.
Jakarta-based Garuda will use Rp 2.7 trillion ($302.4 million) from its cash to finance the fleet purchase. It will also use Rp 1.7 trillion from proceeds of its initial public offering last February.
?We are looking for $200 million in bank loans in the fourth quarter this year,? Elisa said after a general shareholders meeting in a cargo hold at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport in Tangerang on Friday.
The airline said that it would buy 97 additional aircraft in the next four years ? more than double its plan of 36 units announced last year. The company wants to expand its network and coverage amid stiff competition in the airline industry.
Other operators such as Lion Air and AirAsia have announced plans to buy more aircraft to meet travel demand in the country.
?There is a rapid change in the market which prompted the company to boost its fleet accordingly,?? Garuda president director Emirsyah Satar said on Friday.
Garuda will buy 20 Boeing 737-800NG aircraft, double its original plan, and 24 Airbus 330-200s, up from its initial plan of six. It will also purchase 25 narrow-bodied aircraft, compared with its original plan of five units; and 18 aircraft that carry fewer than 100 passengers, up from five.
It is sticking with its plan to buy 10 Boeing 777-300 ERs.
Emirsyah said Garuda maintained its capital spending at $5.3 billion for the next five years. ?The company needs that much to boost business in the next five years,?? he said.
?Some of the aircraft will be delivered this year,?? Emirsyah continued, declining to say which types would be shipped. ?There will be deliveries next year and that will continue until 2016.?
Garuda owns and operates 89 aircraft that serve both international and domestic routes.
It has said that it expects a 20 percent increase in the number of its passengers this year from an estimated 17 million passengers in 2011. The company had estimated that 13.5 million people traveled on its domestic routes last year. It is eyeing new routes in Asia including Taipei, Tokyo and India to compensate for a possible decline in demand from the euro zone.
Shares of Garuda closed unchanged at Rp 630 on Friday. They have risen 33 percent since the start of the year.

"Soul Train" creator Don Cornelius commits suicide (omg!)
LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Don Cornelius, creator of the iconic TV music and dance show "Soul Train" that helped introduce Americans to black pop culture, died on Wednesday after shooting himself in the head, Los Angeles officials said.
Police found the body of Cornelius, 75, at his house in the wealthy, hillside area of Los Angeles called Sherman Oaks at around 4 a.m on Wednesday. He was later pronounced dead at a local hospital.
"The death was reported as a suicide, a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head," Los Angeles coroner's Assistant Chief Ed Winter said. Police said there was no evidence of foul play.
It was not immediately known why Cornelius would have taken his own life, although he was said to have been in failing health in recent years.
Cornelius, who launched "Soul Train" in Chicago in the early 1970s and hosted it for more than 20 years, told a judge in his 2009 divorce that he was suffering from significant health issues and wanted the case settled quickly.
"Soul Train", which ran until 2006, became part of U.S. pop culture history, boosting the careers of newcomers like the Jackson Five and older artists such as James Brown who were trying to tap into a younger audience.
Almost immediately following news that he died, tributes poured in from the music world.
Aretha Franklin, who appeared on the dance and TV show, called his death "sad, stunning and downright shocking and a huge and momentous loss to the African-American community and the world at large."
Composer and record producer Quincy Jones said he was "deeply saddened" at the sudden passing of his friend, colleague and business partner.
The Recording Academy, which gives out the Grammys, called Cornelius a "trailblazer" who "created a cultural phenomenon with 'Soul Train.'"
SON OF THE '60s
Cornelius was born in 1936 in Chicago and as an adult, became a journalist who was active in the civil rights movement. For a time, he worked at local radio station WVON, and by the late 1960s he had dreamed up the idea of a TV show dedicated to the soulful sounds of African-American music.
"Soul Train" was born with the deep-voiced Cornelius as the host who gave hip kids of the '70s what "American Bandstand" creator Dick Clark offered TV viewers in the early days of rock 'n' roll -- a show mixing youth, music, fashion and pop culture.
As "Soul Train" gained popularity, it crossed over into mainstream TV and allowed R&B artists the ability to broaden their fan base.
"Don played an enormous part in my career by giving me exposure when there was none for African American recording artists on television," Dionne Warwick said in a statement. He called him "an icon of the broadcasting world."
Cornelius hosted "Soul Train" until 1993. The show continued to air. It eventually became the longest running U.S. series in first-run syndication. Cornelius sold his company in 2008.
"Once he left the TV show, he kind of dropped out of sight... He stayed within the confines of his family and home," Los Angeles-based black music historian Tom Reed said.
Civil rights activist Rev. Al Sharpton, a longtime friend, expressed shock and grief over Cornelius' death.
"He brought soul music and dance to the world in a way that it had never been shown and he was a cultural game changer on a global level," Sharpton said in a statement.
Former basketball star Earvin Magic Johnson, whose Vibe Holdings company currently owns the rights to "Soul Train", said on his Twitter account; "`Soul Train' taught the world how to dance! I thank (Don) for trusting me with his `Soul Train' brand and I will carry on his legacy through it."
A statement was posted on the Soul Train website calling Cornelius a "television visionary."

Popular Diabetes Drug Might Cut Pancreatic Cancer Risk: Study (HealthDay)
TUESDAY, Jan. 31 (HealthDay News) -- A new Swiss-American study indicates that long-term use of the popular diabetes medication metformin may lower the risk of developing pancreatic cancer, at least among women.
The researchers also found that the long-term use of another class of diabetes medications known as sulfonylureas was associated with a "substantial" bump in pancreatic risk and long-term insulin use was linked to a bump in pancreatic cancer risk in men.
"This result is somewhat unexpected," the team wrote in its paper, which is published in the Jan. 31 online issue of The American Journal of Gastroenterology.
Pancreatic cancer is the fourth most deadly cancer in the United States, with an overall survival rate of less than 5 percent, even though it is fairly rare, according to the U.S. National Institutes of Health.
The researchers noted that previous research has suggested that metformin may lower the risk for other cancers, breast and ovarian cancer in particular.
To explore metformin's protective potential against pancreatic cancer, the team sifted through drug prescription, diagnostic, hospitalization and fatality information that had been collected by the British "General Practice Research Database." The data also included significant demographic information, such as smoking, alcohol use and body mass index.
The team honed in on statistics regarding nearly 2,800 patients (all under the age of 90) who had been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer for the first time between 1995 and 2009. Data concerning almost 16,600 patients who did not have pancreatic cancer was used as a comparison.
The result: Short-term use of metformin or sulfonylureas and/or insulin had no appreciable impact on pancreatic cancer risk.
However, long-term use of each of these medications did appear to have a sizeable impact on pancreatic cancer risk among diabetics. While female patients saw their risk go down with metformin treatment and up with sulfonylureas, male patients saw their risk go up with insulin.
Dr. Michael Choti, a professor of surgery and oncology at the Sidney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, stressed the "importance of trying to identify causes for a devastating disease that is often diagnosed late."
"Over the years, many groups have tried to look at a variety of risk factors, dietary and other things, and there have been some reports over the years," he noted. "But nothing has really panned out well. So this is indeed an interesting study."
"But it's also important to say," Choti added, "that while these could be associations, we cannot really say that what we have here is a cause-and-effect. Pancreatic cancer is a multi-factorial disease. So, while it makes sense conceptually that these drugs could have an impact on the pancreas, which is a metabolic organ, it's still too early to be sure what's happening. And it's too early to recommend metformin as a preventive therapy for pancreatic cancer."
"So this is interesting and important," he said. "But it's not definitive."
